Chapter 10: The Unbreakable Gate
Marlene’s criminal involvement was handled separately by the authorities. I eventually stopped following the intricate details of their legal miseries once Natalie confidently confirmed that my identity, my corporate records, and my property were permanently, legally insulated from their grasp.
What mattered to me was the quiet, deliberate process of rebuilding my peace.
I painstakingly replaced the stolen government documents. I spent thousands of dollars upgrading every single security credential on the estate. I aggressively updated my estate plan, establishing an ironclad trust to ensure Caleb could never make a claim on my assets in the event of an emergency.
And I kept the exact same security team—the guards Caleb had once arrogantly mocked as a paranoid, unnecessary expense.
Months later, the air had turned crisp with the arrival of autumn. I was standing in my kitchen, a glass of dark red wine in my hand, peacefully preparing dinner.
The intercom on the wall chimed softly.
“Ms. Mercer,” Marcus’s familiar, steady voice came through the speaker. “Your former mother-in-law is currently idling at the front gate.”
I set my wine glass down, mildly surprised. I tapped the screen.
Denise was sitting behind the wheel of her sedan. She looked visibly older, her face drawn and tired. According to Marcus, she aggressively claimed she needed to collect a specific box of sentimental items Caleb insisted he had left behind in the garage.
I had already checked with Natalie weeks prior. Every single belonging Caleb owned had already been legally transferred through our respective counsels. There were no boxes left.
I leaned toward the microphone, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of calm.
“Marcus,” I said, giving him the exact same instruction I had given him on that chaotic Thursday night nearly a year ago. “No unauthorized visitors.”
“Copy that, Ms. Mercer. Gate remains sealed.”
Through the high-definition camera feed, I watched Denise stare furiously up the long, winding driveway toward the main house. She pounded her steering wheel in frustration, but the heavy iron gates remained resolutely, beautifully closed. Finally, she put the car in reverse and slowly backed away into the darkness.
I turned away from the screen and almost smiled, taking a sip of my wine.
She had once arrived at that very same gate with a suitcase, a hired locksmith, and a stack of forged paperwork designed to forcibly make my home feel like hers. Caleb had arrogantly ordered me to disappear into the night so his family could comfortably walk inside and take what was mine.
Instead, he was the one who disappeared from my life.
The house remained exactly where it had always been, standing tall and pristine. Mine.
And the expensive, private security system they thought was merely guarding the physical perimeter of the property had actually done something far more important, and far more profound.
It had given me just enough time to discover exactly who I was really keeping out.
