Chapter 10: The Vanguard Gala
Inside the breathtaking grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the crystal chandeliers blinded the eye, and soft, elegant orchestral music floated through the air. The city’s elite—billionaires, powerful socialites, and high-ranking politicians—were gathered in small, exclusive clusters, sipping vintage champagne and speaking in hushed, important tones.
In the darkest, most pathetic corner of the luxurious lounge area, Eleanor Lawson, wearing an out-of-season designer gown that smelled faintly of mothballs, was gripping Lexi’s arm tightly. Lexi, whose face still bore the faint, fading yellow bruises from my slap at the spa, was shamelessly cornering a wealthy real estate developer near the bar.
“Mr. Miller, please, for the sake of our families’ long past business ties, just lend us ten million to hold us over!” Lexi begged, her voice cracking with desperation, entirely abandoning her pride. “My brother is just going through a rough patch! He will bounce back, I promise you! Please, we need cash for the lawyers!”
Mr. Miller jerked his arm away in utter disgust, smoothing his tuxedo jacket, and scoffed loudly.
“Lend you money? Miss Lawson, your entire family is under federal investigation for massive tax fraud, and your brother was just publicly ousted as CEO in a hostile takeover. Every single person in this room knows it. Stop trying to pass your bad luck onto me. Get lost before I call security.”
A group of wealthy, diamond-clad socialites standing nearby erupted into hushed, mocking laughter, pointing their manicured fingers.
“Oh, look, it’s the fallen Lawson matriarch and her trashy daughter,” one whispered loudly. “They used to max out Serena’s credit cards at the spa and act like royalty. Now they’re basically homeless beggars. I bet they had to sneak in the back door just to get into this gala tonight.”
Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, humiliating crimson. Her lips trembled with rage.
“You… you fair-weather snobs!” Eleanor spat, pointing a shaking finger at the crowd. “When my son was on top of the world, you all followed us around begging for favors like stray dogs!”
Lexi, humiliated into a blind rage, shrieked at the socialites. “What are you laughing at?! Once my brother sues that bitch Serena into the ground and takes back the company, you’ll all be crying on your knees!”
“Sue me into the ground?”
My voice, amplified to a deafening volume by the main microphone system in the center of the ballroom, echoed clearly into every single corner of the massive venue.
The live orchestra stopped playing instantly. The room fell into a deathly, expectant silence. Every single pair of eyes in the room snapped toward the brightly lit, gilded main stage.
I was standing there, wearing a stunning, custom-tailored black haute couture evening gown that cost more than Liam’s current net worth. My hair was pinned up flawlessly. Holding the hand of Gracie, who looked like a princess in a beautiful little pink fascinator hat, I walked elegantly to the absolute center of the stage under a blinding barrage of press camera flashes.
“Serena?!” Lexi gasped, pointing at me, screaming with bloodshot eyes from the back of the room. “Why are you here?! What gives you the right to stand up there on that stage?!”
The gala’s host, a famous media personality, immediately stepped to the microphone and announced with deep, respectful reverence.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the primary sponsor and the host of tonight’s Vanguard Charity Gala… the newly appointed, sole Chairwoman of Vanguard Enterprises, Miss Serena Sterling!”
Crash!
The crystal champagne flute slipped from Eleanor’s trembling hand, shattering into a hundred pieces on the marble floor.
Lexi looked as if she had been struck by a physical blow, her face turning a nauseating shade of green. “Impossible… How is she the Chairwoman?! Where is my brother?! Liam is the CEO!” Lexi screamed hysterically, trying to push through the crowd.
I ignored the shocked gasps and whispers sweeping through the elite crowd. I turned and gave a slight, imperceptible nod to the AV technician stationed in the booth.
“Since the Lawson women decided to crash my event tonight,” I spoke calmly into the microphone, my voice an icy blade slicing through the room, “I invite all my esteemed colleagues and friends in the business world to enjoy a short, educational film.”
Behind me, the massive, two-hundred-inch LED presentation screen suddenly illuminated.
It wasn’t a charity promotional video. It was the raw, high-definition security footage pulled directly from the country club’s VIP lounge.
The video played in agonizing clarity. It showed Lexi’s twisted, sadistic face as she pinned a screaming Gracie down to the floor with her knee. It showed Khloe wielding the violently buzzing clippers, brutally shearing the hair and skin off Gracie’s scalp.
Blood streamed down Gracie’s small forehead on the massive screen as she cried out in pure, unfiltered terror. “Mommy! Help me!”
“My god…” a billionaire in the front row gasped, covering his mouth.
“They are animals! Doing that to a helpless five-year-old child?!” a socialite cried out in horror. “Are they even human?!”
The entire ballroom erupted into a tidal wave of absolute disgust, fury, and loud condemnation. The billionaires and politicians turned, staring at the Lawson women as if they were infectious maggots crawling in an open sewer.
“No! No, it’s a fake! It’s a deep fake video! Serena is framing me!” Lexi panicked, waving her arms wildly, shrinking back under the crowd’s dagger-like stares. “She’s framing us!”
I stepped forward to the very edge of the stage, looking down from my throne at the two of them.
“Lexi, it is not just the video,” I said, my voice echoing like thunder. “Look closely. Scrolling at the bottom of the screen is the complete, verified financial ledger of the millions of dollars your family illegally embezzled from my family trust over the past five years to fund your lavish lifestyles. The stolen amounts have officially met the threshold for federal racketeering charges.”
The screen flashed. It changed from the assault footage to display high-resolution, scanned copies of federal arrest warrants and absolute asset seizure notices, all stamped with massive, undeniable red federal seals.
“Mrs. Lawson,” I stared directly at Eleanor, offering her a lethal, victorious smile. “Your beloved, successful son broke under FBI interrogation. He signed a full confession at the county detention center exactly ten minutes ago. He gave up everyone to save himself.”
I pointed a finger straight at Lexi. “And you, and your precious daughter, as active accomplices to the violent assault on Gracie, and as direct beneficiaries of the federal fraud… are going to join him in a cell tonight.”
“You… you toxic bitch! You ruined my son! You ruined our dynasty!”
Eleanor shook violently, her eyes rolling back. Her face turned from red to a terrifying, deep purple. She suddenly clutched her chest, gasping desperately for air, and collapsed stiffly, face-first onto the ballroom floor.
“Mom! Wake up! Mom!” Lexi fell to her knees in sheer terror, slapping her mother’s pale face, screaming for a doctor.
I stood center stage, gripping Gracie’s hand tightly, feeling no pity, only justice. My voice was colder than a winter storm.
“Security,” I commanded into the microphone. “This charity gala is a high-class event for respectable people. We do not tolerate violent criminal trash. Escort these two fugitives out, and hand them over directly to the police waiting outside the doors.”
“Right away, Miss Sterling!”
A dozen massive, heavily armed security guards rushed into the crowd, completely ignoring Lexi’s shrieks and curses. They roughly grabbed the unconscious Eleanor by the arms, dragging her limp body, and forcefully hauled Lexi away. They dragged them both through the spilled champagne, pulling them out of the luxurious ballroom to the waiting sirens outside.
