Chapter 8: The Hostile Takeover
Inside Conference Room 1, located on the twenty-eighth floor of Vanguard Enterprises headquarters, the atmosphere was suffocating. The long, polished mahogany table was surrounded by a dozen panicked directors and sweating senior executives.
The massive LED screen dominating the far wall was flashing a sea of violent red numbers. Within ten minutes of the Wall Street opening bell, Vanguard’s stock had hit the automatic circuit breakers and plunged to the absolute bottom, halting trading. Every single financial news channel in the city was rolling non-stop, split-screen coverage of the chaotic scene outside the police precinct last night and the unfolding corporate disaster.
Liam sat at the head of the table, his tie loosened, his face a sickly pale green, dark bags heavy under his eyes.
He slammed his fist down, trying to regain control of the room. “Gentlemen, please! Last night’s event was a highly exaggerated, personal family misunderstanding. I have our top PR crisis team handling the trending topics as we speak. For today’s emergency meeting, I formally move to immediately strip Serena Sterling of her board seat and have myself take over her voting rights to stabilize the company’s image!”
BANG.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were shoved open with explosive force.
I walked in, my head held high, holding Gracie’s small hand. She was wearing a beautiful, wide-brimmed pink bucket hat, pulled down low, but the thick white gauze and the inflamed, angry red marks on her scalp were still visibly peeking out, a stark reminder of their cruelty.
“Strip my seat?”
My heels clicked sharply, like a ticking clock, as I walked the entire length of the room to the opposite end of the table. I pulled out a plush leather chair for Gracie, seating her gently, and then stared Liam down with a devastating, mocking smile.
“Liam, I really don’t think you understand the reality of your current situation.”
“Serena! How dare you bring that worthless brat into a highly secure corporate boardroom?!” Liam shot up from his chair, his face contorted in panic, pointing wildly at the door. “Security! Where the hell is the security detail?! Throw these trespassers out of my building immediately!”
Two burly security guards standing at the door exchanged nervous glances, but they kept their hands folded and their heads down, completely ignoring his frantic orders.
“Stop shouting, Liam,” I commanded softly. “Vanguard’s security detail does not answer to you anymore.”
I placed both of my hands flat on the polished table, sweeping my icy gaze over the terrified, murmuring board of directors.
“Gentlemen,” I announced, my voice echoing with authority. “The CEO is not stripping my seat today. Instead, I am submitting an absolute, binding motion to the board for the immediate, with-cause termination of Liam Lawson as Chief Executive Officer.”
Liam let out a laugh that sounded more like a manic bark. “Fire me?! You are completely insane! I hold forty percent of the founder shares, and you only hold thirty! Without my signature and my majority block, nobody in this room can touch my position!”
Director Davis, an older, gray-haired man, sighed heavily, looking at me with apologetic eyes. “Miss Sterling, Mr. Lawson is technically correct. The scandal has utterly tanked our stock, and we are furious, but he is still the majority block shareholder. Legally, under the bylaws, we cannot force him out without a vote we cannot win.”
“And what if you add these to the tally?”
I reached into my designer briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of freshly notarized, gold-sealed equity transfer contracts, and slammed them onto the center of the table.
“Over the past three years,” I declared loudly to the room, “Liam Lawson used Khloe Carmichael’s offshore accounts not only for federal tax evasion, but he actively, illegally embezzled the initial seed capital provided by the Sterling Family Trust. He stole from this very company to fund his mistresses.”
I turned to the three oldest, most influential directors sitting on the left side of the table. “Furthermore, over the last forty-eight hours, while Liam was busy playing God at his country club, I liquidated the entirety of the Sterling family’s global cash reserves. I executed a ruthless, hostile takeover, quietly acquiring all of Vanguard’s floating stock at a thirty percent premium… including every single share previously held by Director Davis and Director Smith.”
Davis and Smith lowered their heads, refusing to meet Liam’s eyes, drowning in deep guilt and the weight of their massive payouts.
Liam stared at the thick stack of documents, his palms sweating profusely. He reached out with trembling, desperate hands to flip to the final page, scanning the numbers.
“Impossible… This is impossible!” Liam shrieked, his voice cracking. His face turned the color of old paper. “Since when do you hold fifty-one percent of the shares?! Where the hell did you get that kind of liquid capital?!”
“The assets my grandfather left me in private trusts dwarf your entire, pathetic Lawson family wealth ten times over,” I glared at him icily. “Did you really think sitting in that CEO chair meant you controlled the world?”
I stood up straight, projecting my voice to every corner of the room.
“Now, as the absolute, undisputed majority shareholder, I declare the first resolution of this board! Liam Lawson is permanently stripped of all titles, duties, and access at Vanguard Enterprises. All company-issued vehicles, expense accounts, and real estate are hereby revoked, effective immediately.”
I didn’t pause for breath. “Second resolution: Vanguard will fully, transparently cooperate with the FBI and the IRS to audit every single financial ledger handled during Liam’s tenure. We will hand him over on a silver platter.”
“Serena! You are backing me into a corner!” Liam’s eyes turned a violent, bloodshot crimson. Stripped of all his corporate pretense, his wealth, and his power, he snapped. He lunged across the table at me like a trapped, rabid animal, hands outstretched to strangle me.
I didn’t take a single step back. I didn’t even flinch.
My two private bodyguards stepped forward in a blur of motion. They intercepted Liam mid-lunge, grabbing him by the shoulders, twisting his arms brutally behind his back, and slamming his face violently down onto the slick, hard surface of the conference table.
“Let me go! I am the CEO! You eat off the Lawson family’s plate! How dare you touch me?!” Liam thrashed wildly, hopelessly against the table. His expensive tie was ruined, his suit jacket torn, stripped of every single ounce of dignity he once possessed in this room.
“You aren’t the CEO anymore, Liam,” I leaned down, bringing my face inches from his, looking at his features distorted by rage and sheer, suffocating terror.
“Pack up your personal desk items, and get the hell out of my building.”
I stood up straight, turning my back on him, and waved my hand coldly at the guards. “Escort him out. Use the freight elevator.”
Under the terrified, absolutely submissive gaze of the entire board of directors, Liam Lawson was dragged out of the room by his collar, struggling like a sack of garbage. Only his desperate, furious, echoing screams remained, fading down the long corporate hallway.
