PART 3: THE SECRET MY FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

For three hours, I couldn’t speak.

I stared at the photograph.

A baby.

My father.

And behind them, my mother.

But something was wrong.

My father wasn’t smiling.

He looked terrified.

Thomas studied the photograph.

“Could the baby be someone else?”

I shook my head.

“That is me.”

“How do you know?”

“My mother wrote my birth date on the back.”

Thomas turned the photograph over.

There it was.

October 14, 1994.

My birthday.

But beneath it was another handwritten note.

The child must never know what happened to his real father.

I looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?”

Before he could answer, Sophie walked into the room.

She had overheard us.

“My mom said your dad wasn’t your real dad.”

I stared at her.

“Who is my real father?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Did your mother tell you?”

“She said she found out when she was little.”

“Found out what?”

“That your father took care of you because someone else couldn’t.”

My head spun.

Thomas sat down.

I remained standing.

Seventeen years.

Every memory of my childhood suddenly seemed uncertain.

My father teaching me to ride a bicycle.

My mother telling me I had his eyes.

My father’s hand on my shoulder when I graduated.

His final words before his death.

Take care of the company.

I had believed I knew my family.

Now I didn’t know anything.

We contacted an attorney.

Then an investigator.

By evening, we discovered something buried in the old hospital records.

My birth certificate had been amended when I was two months old.

The original listed my father as Michael Bennett.

Michael Bennett.

Laura Bennett’s brother.

And therefore…

Evelyn Hayes’s uncle.

Sophie’s great-grandfather.

The man supposedly killed in a construction accident seventeen years ago.

Except the death certificate had been filed six weeks after the accident.

Someone had delayed it.

Someone had changed my birth certificate.

Someone had erased Michael Bennett.

My entire life had been built on a lie.

But why?

The answer came from an unexpected person.

Evelyn Hayes.

She appeared at my house at 9:16 p.m.

Alive.

Exhausted.

Her coat was torn.

She looked at Sophie.

Then she collapsed into her daughter’s arms.

“Mom!”

Evelyn held her tightly.

“I told you never to come here.”

Sophie cried.

“I had to.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“You’re Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“You look like him.”

“Like who?”

She swallowed.

“Michael.”

My real father.

I sat down.

“Tell me everything.”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she began.

Seventeen years earlier, Prescott Holdings had been involved in a massive construction project.

The project was profitable.

But contaminated soil had been discovered beneath the site.

The company could have stopped construction.

Instead, someone ordered the contamination reports changed.

Workers became sick.

One worker died.

That worker was Michael Bennett.

My biological father.

Michael had discovered the falsified reports and planned to expose the company.

Laura, his sister, helped him gather evidence.

But Richard discovered what they were doing.

He threatened them.

Then he offered my father a deal.

Silence in exchange for money.

Michael refused.

The night before he planned to go public, his car was forced off the road.

He died.

Laura disappeared.

And my mother, who had been pregnant with me, was pressured into signing documents that placed me under Daniel Prescott’s name.

“Why would my mother agree?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard threatened you.”

“Me?”

“You were a baby.”

She looked at Sophie.

“Richard told your grandmother that if she spoke, you would disappear too.”

My hands went cold.

“And my father?”

“Daniel found out.”

“What did he do?”

“He tried to expose Richard.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Because Richard threatened him with the same thing.”

“Me.”

She nodded.

“Your father spent seventeen years collecting evidence.”

“Why seventeen?”

“Because he believed Richard had built enough protection around himself that nobody could touch him.”

“And the termination letter?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“I found evidence that Richard was still using Prescott Holdings to pay people connected to the old cover-up.”

She pulled out a USB drive.

“I was going to take it to federal investigators.”

“Then Richard found out.”

“Yes.”

“He forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make it look like you were the one who ordered my termination.”

I stared at the drive.

“What is on it?”

“Everything.”

Bank transfers.

Recorded conversations.

Original environmental reports.

Witness statements.

And one video.

A video of Richard meeting with the lawyer who had falsified my birth records.

We watched it.

Richard’s voice came through the speakers.

“Daniel will never expose me.”

The lawyer asked, “What about the boy?”

Richard laughed.

“Gabriel believes Daniel is his father. Let him inherit the company. He’ll spend his life protecting the Prescott name.”

The recording ended.

I sat in silence.

Then I understood.

The entire plan had been designed around me.

Richard didn’t need to control me.

He only needed me to believe the Prescott family was worth protecting.

He had spent seventeen years turning me into the perfect guardian of his secret.

But he had made one mistake.

He underestimated a six-year-old girl in yellow boots.
