PART 4 — THE DOORBELL
Standing on the porch was a man Daniel had not seen in years.
Vanessa’s face went white.
Daniel stopped moving.
The man looked at Vanessa.
Then at the baby.
Then at Daniel.
His name was Marcus.
Vanessa’s legal husband.
The man she had told Daniel had abandoned her.
The man she had described as dangerous.
The man she claimed had disappeared before the baby was born.
Marcus stepped inside.
“Hello, Vanessa.”
She took a step backward.
“Why are you here?”
He held up an envelope.
“Because I finally got the test results.”
Daniel’s eyes shifted between them.
“What test results?”
Marcus looked at him.
“DNA.”
Silence.
Vanessa whispered,
“Marcus, don’t.”
But he continued.
“I hired a private lab six weeks ago.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What is he talking about?”
Marcus opened the envelope.
“The baby is mine.”
Daniel stared at him.
“No.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Daniel, please.”
He looked furious.
“You told me you weren’t married.”
“I was separated.”
“You told me he left.”
“I thought he was never coming back.”
“You told me the baby was mine.”
“I was confused.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Confused?”
Marcus looked at me.
“You knew?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned sharply toward me.
“You knew he was her husband?”
“I knew more than that.”
Rebecca walked through the doorway behind Marcus.
Daniel froze again.
“What is your lawyer doing here?”
“Your lawyer,” I corrected.
He stared at me.
Rebecca placed a folder on the table.
“I represent Claire now in all matters relating to the dissolution of this marriage.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Divorce?”
I smiled.
“You brought your mistress into our home.”
“I told you she needed help.”
“You told her she would stay six months.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“You told her I would move into the small bedroom.”
“That was a misunderstanding.”
“You told her the house would be hers.”
He looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa began crying harder.
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m not here to defend Claire.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“I’m here because you used my name to obtain money.”
Daniel stiffened.
“What?”
Marcus pulled out another document.
“You told Daniel that I refused to support you.”
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I didn’t lie.”
Marcus laughed.
“You opened three credit accounts in my name.”
Vanessa’s face went blank.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“What did he just say?”
Marcus handed the documents to Rebecca.
Rebecca reviewed them.
Then looked at Daniel.
“You may want to sit down.”
Daniel didn’t.
Rebecca continued.
“Vanessa has been transferring money from several accounts.”
Daniel swallowed.
“How much?”
Marcus answered.
“More than eighty thousand dollars.”
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“That wasn’t me.”
Marcus held up his phone.
“Then explain the security footage.”
He played a video.
Vanessa entering a bank.
Vanessa leaving a bank.
Vanessa meeting Daniel.
Vanessa accepting envelopes.
Daniel took a step backward.
“You said you needed the money for the baby.”
“I did.”
“You said you had medical bills.”
“I did.”
Marcus interrupted.
“She had no medical bills.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then what was the money for?”
Marcus looked at me.
“Ask her.”
I already knew.
Vanessa had been paying for a luxury apartment.
A car.
Designer clothing.
And a private investigator.
Daniel looked sick.
“You hired a private investigator?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“To follow me?”
Still nothing.
“To follow Claire?”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I needed to know what she knew.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What she knew about what?”
She looked at him.
And for the first time, there was no control in her face.
Only panic.
I answered for her.
“About your plan.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“What plan?”
I walked to the table.
Then opened the folder.
Inside were printed copies of his messages.
Hotel receipts.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
The second phone.
And the trust document from my father’s estate.
I placed them in front of him.
“This plan.”
Daniel looked at the papers.
His hands began trembling.
“You went through my phone?”
“The second one?”
He looked at me.
I smiled.
“You forgot you had it.”
He slowly sat down.
Rebecca pointed toward the trust document.
“This is especially important.”
Daniel looked at the page.
His face lost all color.
“How did you get this?”
“From my father’s estate files.”
“You weren’t supposed to know about that.”
“I know.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?”
She shook her head.
Daniel turned back to me.
“Claire, listen to me.”
“No.”
“I can explain.”
“No.”
“This isn’t what you think.”
I laughed softly.
“It is exactly what I think.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand everything.”
He stood abruptly.
“I was trying to protect my future.”
“And I was part of that future?”
“Yes.”
“As your wife?”
“Yes.”
“As your servant?”
He said nothing.
“As the woman who cooks while you sleep with someone else?”
Silence.
“As the woman who leaves so you can claim I abandoned the marriage?”
Daniel sat back down.
I could see it now.
The moment when his mind finally understood that the story he had created for everyone else would never exist.
I handed Rebecca another document.
She slid it toward him.
“Notice of intent to file for dissolution of marriage,” she said.
Daniel looked at me.
“You already filed?”
“Yesterday.”
He closed his eyes.
“Claire.”
“You wanted me out.”
“I didn’t mean it like this.”
“You meant it exactly like this.”
Vanessa began crying.
Daniel looked at her.
And something strange happened.
For the first time, he didn’t look at her with affection.
He looked at her with disgust.
“You lied to me.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You used me.”
“You used me first.”
“I loved you.”
“No.”
Daniel stood.
“You loved what I could give you.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Now you two finally understand each other.”
An hour later, Marcus left with Rebecca.
Vanessa remained in the living room.
Daniel stood near the window.
No one spoke.
Finally, Vanessa said,
“What happens now?”
Daniel looked at me.
“I suppose Claire decides.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He frowned.
“Then who decides?”
“The law.”
I picked up the folder.
“You both spent months planning how to control my future.”
I walked toward the stairs.
“You forgot one thing.”
Daniel looked at me.
“What?”
I turned around.
“I stopped asking for permission.”
Then I went upstairs.
For the first time in eleven years, I slept alone.
And it was the most peaceful sleep I had ever had.
