PART 4 — THE TRAP CLOSES
I told Daniel everything.
We called the police.
But before they arrived, Thomas stopped us.
“Wait.”
“Why?”
“Because if they realize we’ve found the records, Lily will disappear.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Where is she?”
Thomas pointed to one photograph.
It showed a woman in her forties.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A crescent-moon necklace.
I looked at it.
“That’s her?”
“Yes.”
“Where does she live?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“I do.”
We all turned.
She sat on the basement floor.
Broken.
Exhausted.
“I found her twelve years ago.”
Daniel’s voice was barely controlled.
“Where?”
“In another state.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because she didn’t know who she was.”
“You lied to her too?”
“I was protecting her.”
“You keep saying that!”
Evelyn covered her face.
“Your father wanted to use her.”
Thomas stepped toward her.
“That isn’t true.”
“You gave people access to my business. You gave them names. You sold information!”
Thomas looked devastated.
“I was trying to survive.”
“You destroyed us!”
The police arrived.
For the first time, Evelyn seemed relieved.
But that relief lasted only seconds.
The front door opened.
A police officer walked in.
Then another.
The second officer looked at Thomas.
“Mr. Vale?”
Thomas nodded.
The officer raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Thomas froze.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Wait.”
The officer repeated:
“Now.”
Then the first officer pulled out his own weapon.
“Everyone down.”
I realized immediately.
They weren’t there to protect us.
They were part of the trap.
One of them grabbed Evelyn.
The other grabbed Daniel.
Thomas moved.
A gunshot exploded through the basement.
Thomas fell.
Daniel screamed.
I ran.
I didn’t know where.
Only that I had to get away.
I sprinted through the tunnel.
Someone chased me.
I reached the hidden room.
There was nowhere to go.
Then I saw an old maintenance hatch.
I kicked it open.
It led behind the garage.
I crawled through and ran into the yard.
I hid beneath the porch while two men searched the property.
I heard one say:
“Find the documents.”
The other replied:
“Forget the documents. Find the woman.”
My blood turned to ice.
I stayed hidden for nearly an hour.
Then I saw a vehicle arrive.
A woman stepped out.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A crescent-moon pendant around her neck.
Lily.
She entered the house carrying a small handbag.
I wanted to warn her.
But I couldn’t.
Then she stopped.
A man in the doorway raised a gun.
She screamed.
I came out of hiding.
“RUN!”
Everything happened at once.
The man turned.
Lily ran.
I tackled him.
We crashed into the grass.
He hit me.
I screamed.
Then someone grabbed him from behind.
Thomas.
He was bleeding but alive.
The man tried to shoot.
Thomas knocked the gun away.
Lily kicked it into the bushes.
A siren sounded.
Real police this time.
The corrupt officers had apparently triggered an internal investigation when they attempted to access the hidden records.
Within minutes, the yard filled with police.
The men were arrested.
Daniel and Evelyn were brought outside.
Daniel ran to me.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
Then he looked at Lily.
She was crying.
Thomas approached her slowly.
“I’m your father.”
She stared at him.
Then at Evelyn.
“You knew?”
Evelyn nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Lily’s voice broke.
“You let me believe I had no family.”
Evelyn began to cry.
“I thought I was keeping you alive.”
Lily whispered:
“You don’t get to decide that for me.”
The hidden records finally exposed what had happened.
Thomas had indeed been involved in criminal activities.
He had committed serious financial crimes.
But he had also collected evidence against the people who controlled the operation.
When he threatened to expose them, they tried to silence him.
Evelyn had discovered the plan.
She tried to trap Thomas inside the house, hoping to force him to reveal where he’d hidden the records.
Then the fire began.
She fled.
Thomas survived.
The people behind the operation spent years hunting the records.
When the house was sold decades later, they eventually discovered that the property was now connected to Daniel.
That’s when the surveillance began.
And that’s why Evelyn had forced herself into our home.
She knew that if the criminals returned, she’d rather be there than leave Daniel alone.
Her methods had been cruel.
Her lies had damaged everyone.
But underneath them had been genuine fear.
That didn’t erase what she’d done.
It only made the truth more complicated.
The final piece came from the old photograph.
The handwriting wasn’t Thomas’s.
It wasn’t Evelyn’s.
It belonged to Lily.
She had found the original photograph years earlier.
She had been secretly investigating her past.
She had planted some of the clues to force Evelyn to tell the truth.
The stranger in the master bedroom?
Thomas.
He had been waiting there because Lily had arranged a meeting.
10:55 was the time Evelyn had once used every night to check the locks.
The exact moment she had lived in fear of for thirty-three years.
Lily wanted her to face it.
And she did.
Evelyn walked upstairs one last time.
At 10:55 p.m.
She entered the master bedroom.
Thomas was standing by the window.
She stopped.
Her face collapsed.
“You were never supposed to come back.”
Thomas stared at her.
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“I came back for my children.”
Then he looked at Lily.
“And for the truth.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
After thirty-three years, she finally admitted everything.
