PART 4 — THE HIDDEN ROOM
We spent nearly two hours going through the boxes.
At first, everything was about Lucy.
Her birth.
Her adoption.
Nora.
Daniel’s letters.
But then Helen found another file.
She hesitated before opening it.
“What?” I asked.
“It concerns Thomas Bennett.”
She placed the file on the table.
Inside were financial records.
Bank transfers.
Forged signatures.
Property documents.
Daniel frowned.
“What does this have to do with us?”
Lucy answered.
“Everything.”
She picked up a document.
“My adoptive mother inherited this hotel from Eleanor.”
I looked at her.
“She owns it?”
Lucy nodded.
“Eleanor left it to me.”
Daniel stared at her.
“But why?”
Lucy gave a small laugh.
“Because she believed the hotel was part of my history.”
Helen continued.
“Thomas Bennett used the hotel for a financial scheme years ago.”
I looked at the records.
Millions of dollars had moved through shell companies.
Some names were covered.
Others were clear.
Then I saw one name.
DANIEL HALE.
I felt cold.
“Why is his name here?”
Daniel looked confused.
“I never knew about this.”
Lucy picked up another document.
“Because someone wanted it to look like you were involved.”
“Who?”
She didn’t answer.
Helen did.
“Thomas Bennett.”
My mind raced.
“So after lying about the baby, he also framed Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“To protect the family fortune.”
I stared at Lucy.
“Your family was afraid Daniel would claim you?”
Helen nodded.
“Thomas believed Daniel would eventually discover the truth and challenge him.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“That’s why my bank application was rejected in 1987.”
I turned toward him.
“What?”
“I thought it was bad credit.”
Helen shook her head.
“They flagged your name.”
Daniel ran his hand over his face.
“For forty years I thought I had somehow ruined my financial record.”
I looked at the documents.
Someone had forged loan agreements using Daniel’s name.
It explained things from our past.
The denied mortgage.
The mysterious debt notices.
The letter from a collection agency we’d never understood.
I suddenly remembered Daniel burning several envelopes in the backyard.
He had told me they were mistakes.
They weren’t.
They were pieces of a life someone had deliberately sabotaged.
Then Lucy found a final folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood beside Thomas Bennett.
I recognized him.
My blood ran cold.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
The man beside Thomas was younger, but unmistakable.
It was Daniel’s own older brother, Michael.
Michael had died twenty-five years ago.
“What was he doing with Thomas?” Daniel whispered.
Helen opened a letter.
“Because Michael helped him.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“No.”
“He was involved in hiding Lucy’s records.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My brother would never…”
Lucy interrupted gently.
“There’s more.”
She placed another document on the table.
It was a confession.
Michael had written that he had learned Lucy was alive.
He had known Daniel was her father.
He had been paid to keep Daniel from discovering the truth.
Daniel sat down heavily.
“My brother knew.”
I put my hand on his shoulder.
For once, there was nothing I could say.
Then we heard footsteps above us.
Helen’s face changed.
She closed the folder.
“Someone else is in the building.”
Lucy looked frightened.
“The hotel is closed to everyone tonight.”
The footsteps stopped.
Then we heard the basement door slam.
Daniel stood.
“Stay here.”
“No,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Not this time.”
For forty years, secrets had divided people in this hotel.
I wasn’t letting one more secret pull us apart.
We walked upstairs together.
At the end of the hall stood a man in a dark coat.
He was holding a briefcase.
Lucy stopped.
“Marcus.”
The man’s eyes narrowed.
“Lucy.”
Daniel whispered.
“Who is he?”
Lucy said:
“My adoptive mother’s brother.”
Marcus smiled without warmth.
“You should have left this place alone.”
