Garrett’s heart began to beat furiously inside his chest as he leaned against the smooth glass wall.
“Are the results fully conclusive regarding both of the children?” Garrett demanded in a hushed, intense voice.
“Both Liam and Owen are unquestionably your biological sons with a ninety nine point nine percent statistical probability,” the attorney confirmed.
Garrett closed his eyes tightly as he pressed his hand against his forehead to steady his surging emotions.
For several long seconds, he heard nothing except the quiet, rhythmic hum of the skyscraper’s advanced ventilation system.
Two biological sons. His boys. His flesh and blood.
The scientific certainty should have provided a sense of complete closure and relief to his troubled mind.
Instead, it opened a massive emotional doorway revealing four painful years of total absence that could never be erased.
He quietly thanked his attorney for the update and promptly ended the phone call.
He stood alone in the hallway for several minutes, completely incapable of returning to the corporate meeting inside the boardroom.
That same evening, he drove directly to Hannah’s apartment building while holding the official lab report inside a sealed envelope.
Hannah opened her apartment door before he could even raise his hand to knock a second time.
“You received the official lab results from the medical facility, didn’t you?” she asked directly.
Garrett offered a single, firm nod of his head. “Yes, the test confirms that they are biologically mine.”
Hannah closed her eyes briefly as a quiet sigh escaped her lips. “I already knew that truth deep in my heart.”
Garrett extended his hand to offer her the thick white envelope containing the formal scientific documentation.
However, Hannah made no move to take the envelope from his hand.
“You should really read through the formal scientific breakdown yourself, Hannah,” Garrett suggested gently.
“I do not need to read paperwork to confirm what I already know to be true,” she stated calmly.
“Hannah, please,” Garrett urged softly.
“I believed you the very first moment you looked into my eyes and declared them as your sons,” she confessed softly.
Garrett swallowed hard as a wave of deep gratitude washed over his spirit.
“Where do we go from this exact point forward?” Garrett asked, searching her eyes for guidance.
“That depends entirely on whether you are asking that question as their father or as my ex-husband,” Hannah replied cleverly.
“I suppose I am asking from both perspectives simultaneously,” Garrett admitted honestly.
“Navigating both roles at once is extremely dangerous ground for us,” Hannah warned him cautiously.
“I am fully aware of the delicate nature of our dynamic,” Garrett acknowledged respectfully.
Hannah glanced past his shoulder toward the stairwell behind him before offering a practical suggestion.
“The boys are currently staying downstairs with Mrs. Gable, a trusted neighbor who watches them when I work late,” she explained.
“Would it be acceptable for me to go downstairs and see them briefly tonight?” Garrett asked hopefully.
“No, not tonight,” Hannah answered firmly without hesitation.
A visible flicker of sharp disappointment crossed Garrett’s face before he could manage to conceal his emotion.
“Why can I not see them tonight if the paternity is officially proven?” Garrett inquired gently.
“Because we cannot simply flip an emotional switch in their young lives like turning on a light,” Hannah explained logically.
“They do not truly know you yet, and you do not know them,” she pointed out pragmatically, “and if you suddenly appear every single day buying expensive gifts, only to vanish when work demands your attention, these innocent boys will pay the painful emotional price.”
“I swear to you on my life that I will never vanish from their lives again,” Garrett promised passionately.
“You made similar grand promises about your presence during our marriage, Garrett,” she reminded him with painful accuracy.
Garrett accepted her verbal blow in silent humility, recognizing the validity of her historical skepticism.
“What actionable steps can I take right now to earn your trust?” Garrett asked humbly.
“Show up consistently over time without fail,” Hannah commanded plainly.
“How often would you like me to visit them initially?” Garrett inquired eagerly.
“We will start with one designated afternoon per week,” Hannah established strictly.
“Only one afternoon a week?” Garrett repeated, unable to hide his desire for more time.
“Do you possess a better alternative proposal that protects their emotional stability?” she challenged with a sharp eyebrow raise.
Garrett offered a humble, subtle smile despite the strict limitations she was placing upon him.
“No, one afternoon per week is a fair starting point,” Garrett agreed respectfully.
“Can I take them out to fun places in the city during those visits?” Garrett asked further.
“Not yet,” Hannah ruled firmly, “we will begin right here inside this apartment, with me present at all times.”
Garrett offered a respectful nod of agreement. “Is this coming Saturday morning acceptable for our first scheduled visit?”
“Saturday morning at precisely ten o’clock,” Hannah confirmed smoothly.
“I will be standing at your front door at precisely ten o’clock,” Garrett committed firmly.
Hannah observed his solemn expression with cautious brown eyes before offering a final firm rule.
“Do not make promises lightly to these children, Garrett,” she warned softly.
“I am taking every single word with absolute seriousness,” Garrett assured her.
As he turned to walk toward the carpeted staircase, Hannah called out to him one last time.
“Garrett, wait,” she called out from the doorway.
He turned around instantly to face her. “Yes, Hannah?”
“Bring absolutely nothing with you when you visit,” she commanded firmly.
Garrett understood her meaning immediately without requiring further explanation.
“No expensive gifts or toys whatsoever,” Garrett confirmed with a respectful nod.
“No gifts,” Hannah repeated firmly before slowly closing her apartment door.
Garrett walked down the quiet hallway with a renewed sense of purpose taking root inside his heart.
Downstairs in Mrs. Gable’s modest apartment, little Liam and Owen were lying happily on a colorful rug surrounded by crayons.
They possessed no knowledge that the wealthy man who had just left upstairs had officially been confirmed as their biological father.
Hannah walked downstairs a moment later, sat beside her sons, and watched Liam draw a colorful rocket ship with three tiny windows.
“Is that little rocket carrying you and Owen up to the moon, sweetie?” Hannah asked softly while pointing at the paper.
Liam shook his head side to side. “No Mommy, this rocket is carrying our whole big family!”
Hannah felt her breath catch sharply in her chest as a sudden wave of emotion hit her.
“Who is sitting inside that third window near the top of the rocket ship?” Hannah inquired gently.
Liam took a black crayon and carefully drew another small figure inside the drawn window space.
“This person sitting right here is the nice Saturn man from the café,” Liam revealed with innocent joy.
Owen leaned over his brother’s shoulder and pointed his small finger at the newly drawn pencil figure.
“He is the Saturn man!” Owen cheered softly.
Hannah stared down at the simple crayon drawing depicting four figures traveling through the stars together.
She desperately wanted to explain to young Liam that real human families were not built overnight from colorful drawings or wishful thinking.
Real families were forged through endless spent time, unshakeable trust, and the profound courage to remain present when life became difficult.
However, she also recognized that quiet hope possessed a unique way of entering a home when least expected.
Sometimes genuine hope arrived long before anyone felt fully prepared to receive its overwhelming presence.
Late that night, after tucking her sons into bed, Hannah opened an old metal lockbox she kept hidden beneath her bed.
Inside the box rested yellowing hospital armbands, discharge medical forms, a faded black and white photograph, and a sealed envelope.
She carefully placed the official DNA paternity report right beside the old sealed white envelope.
The envelope bore the official logo of Lakeshore Community Hospital from the exact night her twin boys were delivered.
On the front surface, written in bold, precise cursive handwriting she recognized instantly, were six clear warning words:
Do not let Garrett see this.
For four full years, Hannah had assumed the cryptic warning had been written by someone representing Garrett’s wealthy mother.
She had assumed Garrett’s mother had orchestrated a scheme to keep her away from Garrett’s life permanently.
However, a secondary medical document resting beneath the sealed envelope completely altered the entire foundation of her understanding.
Hannah lifted the thin, yellowed sheet of medical paper with extreme care.
At the top of the official document, directly beneath her full legal name, was a typed line that read:
Date of Delivery: October 14
Hannah stared at the black ink in absolute shock as her heart began to beat wildly against her ribs.
Her twin boys had officially celebrated their birthdays on October 21 for four full years.
October 21 was printed clearly on every official insurance claim, every birth certificate, every hospital bill, and every school record.
October 21 was the exact date she had recited to pediatric doctors, neighborhood teachers, and her sons during birthday parties.
Yet this original hospital intake document clearly stated that her boys had been delivered on October 14.
She read the typed line a second time, then a third time, completely unable to comprehend the massive discrepancy.
Her mind raced back to the terrifying, chaotic night her premature twin boys were born.
She vividly remembered going into sudden emergency labor on October 21 amidst a heavy autumn rainstorm.
She remembered the loud siren blaring as the city ambulance rushed her through slick streets while she clutched her swollen stomach.
She remembered the harsh fluorescent lights of the emergency room and the urgent voices of medical personnel commanding her to breathe.
Most of all, she remembered the overwhelming terror when her premature infants were rushed away to neonatology before she could hold them.
However, if her twin boys had actually been delivered on October 14, where had an entire missing week vanished to?
And why had every subsequent official public record been systematically altered to reflect October 21?
She carefully returned the paper to the metal lockbox, only to pull it back out a second later as her hands trembled uncontrollably.
At seven o’clock the following morning, Hannah dialed the central administrative office of Lakeshore Community Hospital.
The switchboard operator connected her call to the medical records department, where a polite archivist named Gloria answered the line.
“I urgently require the absolute complete, unedited medical file from my twin delivery four years ago,” Hannah requested firmly.
“I need every single original intake document, not a summarized digital overview,” she added with clear desperation.
There was a long, agonizing pause on the phone line while Gloria typed commands into her administrative computer keyboard.
“Ms. Prescott, your archived paper records were officially transferred when Lakeshore merged with Northview Medical Group,” Gloria explained.
“Can I come in person and obtain physical copies of those original documents today?” Hannah pressed urgently.
“You can request access to basic summaries, but archived neonatal files often require formal administrative clearance,” Gloria clarified.
“I am the biological mother of those children, so I possess full legal rights to view every page,” Hannah asserted firmly.
“I completely understand your frustration, Ms. Prescott, but I am legally obligated to follow standard privacy protocols,” Gloria responded gently.
“Please, I need an in person appointment immediately because something critical in my file is factually wrong,” Hannah pleaded.
“Is there an active medical emergency involving the children’s health right now?” Gloria inquired with tone of professional concern.
“No, there is no physical medical emergency,” Hannah admitted honestly.
“Then the absolute earliest open appointment I can schedule for you with an archivist is Wednesday, November sixth,” Gloria offered.
Hannah glanced up at her kitchen wall calendar and realized the date was three full weeks away.
She thought about her demanding teaching schedule, her bus commutes, her limited finances, and her delicate emotional balance.
“Please book that appointment for me on November sixth,” Hannah conceded with a heavy, defeated sigh.
After hanging up the phone call, she sat at her kitchen table wrapping her hands around a mug of lukewarm coffee she had forgotten to drink.
She briefly considered picking up her phone and dialing Garrett’s number to inform him of the shocking discovery.
However, she immediately remembered his firm promise to show up without corporate investigators, without legal demands, and without money.
This terrifying medical mystery was not a problem that his immense wealth could easily fix overnight.
Not yet.
At precisely ten o’clock on Saturday morning, Garrett arrived at her apartment building right on time.
Hannah watched silently from her second floor window as he crossed the quiet street below.
He wore a casual dark wool sweater instead of a formal business suit and carried nothing except a warm paper cup of black coffee.
He stopped near the building entrance, double checked the address number on the wall, and glanced up toward her window.
He seemed to intuitively feel her presence standing behind the glass frame above him.
For a few quiet seconds, neither of them moved as their eyes met through the glass window pane.
Hannah walked over to her apartment intercom system and pressed the talk button to buzz him inside.
“Come on up, Garrett,” she spoke clearly through the small speaker wall unit.
When Garrett entered her apartment a moment later, the twin boys were sitting at the small kitchen table eating toast.
Liam had carefully arranged three colored crayons beside his breakfast plate in order of their color warmth.
Owen was attempting to balance a green grape on the back of his small hand with intense concentration.
“Look, it is the Saturn man!” Owen announced loudly while dropping his grape onto the table.
Garrett offered a warm, genuine smile as he walked into the room. “Hello there, Captain Green.”
Owen proudly picked up his green plastic dinosaur from the table and held it high in the air.
“Captain Green says that you are late for our Saturday morning play time!” Owen declared animatedly.
Garrett glanced over at the kitchen wall clock and chuckled softly. “I am standing here at precisely ten o’clock.”
“That is still late for a dinosaur who wakes up at sunrise!” Owen countered with sound prehistoric logic.
“I will work very hard to improve my speed for next Saturday,” Garrett promised with a playful nod.
Hannah observed him silently from the kitchen sink as he quietly removed his shoes near the front door without being asked.
It was a small, thoughtful action, but Hannah noticed it immediately because the old Garrett would have walked in as if he owned the room.
This humbled version of Garrett waited quietly for instructions on where he should step next.
“Would you like some warm breakfast or toast, Garrett?” Hannah offered politely from the kitchen counter.
“Yes, I would truly appreciate that, thank you,” Garrett accepted warmly.
“Would you like a fresh cup of coffee as well?” she inquired further.
“Yes, please, black coffee would be wonderful,” Garrett answered gratefully.
The twin boys immediately pulled Garrett toward the small table to display their latest artistic crayon creations.
Liam had designed a massive spacecraft featuring six powerful booster engines drawn with bright red crayon.
Owen had drawn a large green dinosaur wearing a golden crown while sitting on top of a red mountain structure.
Garrett analyzed both children’s drawings with the utmost gravity, treating their explanations like high level corporate proposals.
“Captain Green is the absolute king of the entire dangerous jungle!” Owen stated proudly.
“Does Captain Green possess a grand castle inside his jungle kingdom?” Garrett inquired with genuine curiosity.
“No, he lives on top of a giant active volcano!” Owen revealed dramatically.
“It is not a real dangerous volcano,” Liam interjected logically, “it is just a pretend volcano made of green plastic.”
Garrett nodded his head in serious agreement with Liam’s logical clarification.
“That is definitely a much safer living arrangement for Captain Green,” Garrett observed lightheartedly.
Owen contemplated Garrett’s perspective for a second before nodding his head in agreement. “Yeah, probably safer.”
Hannah poured black coffee into a mug and leaned against the counter while watching Garrett interact naturally with their sons.
She had fully expected the Saturday morning visit to feel painfully awkward and forced between them.
Instead, the morning felt strangely natural, as if a missing piece of their family dynamic had quietly slipped back into place.
Garrett dropped down onto the living room rug and helped the boys build a tall tower using small wooden blocks.
He patiently allowed Owen to knock the wooden tower down three separate times with loud giggles of pure joy.
When Liam grew frustrated because a structural block would not balance properly near the top, Garrett refrained from fixing it for him.
He waited patiently until Liam turned his head and specifically asked his father for assistance with the building piece.
Hannah noted every single subtle behavior with keen observation.
The patience. The emotional restraint. The humble respect for her presence.
She noticed how Garrett constantly glanced toward her across the room before making simple choices with the children.
At eleven o’clock, Owen looked out the window at the clear sky and asked if they could go play at the neighborhood park.
Hannah hesitated for a few seconds before answering his request.
The autumn weather was chilly but clear, and the public playground was situated only two short blocks away from her building.
She had initially resolved to keep Garrett’s first visit strictly contained inside her small apartment space.
However, the boys were becoming energetic, and Garrett had spent two full hours demonstrating remarkable emotional discipline.
“We can go to the park for thirty minutes,” Hannah ruled, “and you boys must stay right where I can see you at all times.”
Garrett nodded his head in total agreement with her conditions. “Thirty minutes sounds like a great plan.”
The local park featured cold metal benches and tall bare trees that had lost their autumn leaves.
Liam carried a small plastic magnifying glass, meticulously inspecting grass blades for signs of insects.
Owen marched proudly ahead of the group with Captain Green tucked safely inside his heavy jacket pocket.
Garrett walked behind the boys at their relaxed pace, keeping a watchful eye on their every step.
A pair of local mothers sitting near the playground swing set immediately recognized Garrett’s striking facial features from news coverage.
Hannah observed the sudden flicker of recognition in their eyes as they whispered discreetly to one another while pointing at his boots.
She fully anticipated that Garrett might feel uncomfortable or react arrogance to the public attention.
Instead, Garrett completely ignored the whispering onlookers and focused entirely on pushing Owen on the high swing set.
He counted aloud slowly with every high swing, bringing loud peals of laughter from his young son.
Meanwhile, Liam climbed up onto the lowest wooden platform of the jungle gym structure before coming to a sudden halt.
“Mommy, I cannot climb back down by myself!” Liam called out with a tremor of fear in his young voice.
Garrett walked over and stood directly beneath the platform, but he refrained from grabbing the boy immediately.
“Would you like me to lift you down safely, or would you like to try stepping down yourself?” Garrett offered gently.
“I want you to help me down, please,” Liam requested timidly while reaching out his tiny hands.
Garrett extended his strong hands, carefully supported Liam’s frame, and lowered him safely onto the wood chips below.
“Thank you very much, Saturn man,” Liam offered politely while straightening his blue jacket.
“You are very welcome, Liam,” Garrett replied with a warm smile.
Liam looked up at Garrett’s face with innocent curiosity shining in his dark eyes.
“Are you a super rich person in real life?” Liam inquired directly without any filter.
Hannah stiffened slightly near the swing set as she heard her young son’s blunt question.
However, Garrett remained completely unfazed and knelt down to eye level with the child.
“I possess a lot of money to pay for expensive things,” Garrett answered truthfully and simply.
“That means you are super rich,” Liam concluded with simple child logic.
“I suppose that is an accurate statement,” Garrett conceded humbly.
“Do you own a giant castle with high walls?” Liam pressed further.
“No, I do not own a castle,” Garrett answered with a soft laugh.
“Do you have a massive swimming pool at your house?” Liam asked curiously.
“Yes, I do have a swimming pool,” Garrett acknowledged.
“Is your swimming pool bigger than our entire apartment building?” Liam inquired with wide eyes.
Garrett considered his penthouse building layout for a second before answering truthfully. “Yes, it is bigger than this building.”
Owen abandoned the swing set and ran over to join their conversation near the jungle gym.
“Do you have a real live dinosaur living at your house?” Owen asked excitedly.
“No, I do not have a real live dinosaur,” Garrett admitted with a smile.
“Do you have a pretend green dinosaur toy at your house?” Owen probed further.
“No, I do not own any dinosaur toys,” Garrett conceded.
“Then we definitely do not want to live at your house!” Owen declared with firm conviction.
Garrett erupted into a burst of genuine, heart felt laughter that surprised Hannah across the playground.
She had not heard him laugh with such lighthearted, unburdened joy in four long, painful years.
“That is a completely fair point, Owen,” Garrett agreed joyfully while rubbing his son’s shoulder.
On the quiet walk back to the apartment, Liam held Garrett’s right hand while Owen held his left hand tightly.
Hannah walked a few steps behind them, silently watching their three long shadows stretch across the concrete sidewalk.
She had mentally rehearsed this exact scenario in painful nightmares and quiet daydreams over four long years.
She had constantly feared Garrett returning to snatch her boys away using high powered lawyers, or spoiling them with endless materialism.
She had never anticipated seeing him walk humbly beside them, gently asking Owen if Captain Green needed an afternoon nap.
When they returned to the apartment, both young boys quickly fell fast asleep in their small bedroom from the cold air.
Garrett stood awkwardly near the front entrance, visibly uncertain whether he should depart or stay a few moments longer.
“The boys had a truly wonderful time playing with you today, Garrett,” Hannah offered gently breaking the silence.
“I had an absolutely wonderful time spending the morning with them as well,” Garrett confessed softly.
“You handled yourself remarkably well with them today,” she commended him sincerely.
Garrett turned his gaze toward the closed bedroom door where his sons were resting.
“I cannot stop thinking about every single moment I missed over these lost four years,” Garrett admitted with raw emotion.
“You will likely keep thinking about those lost years for a long time to come,” Hannah stated realistically.
“Does the agonizing emotional pain of missing their early childhood ever stop hurting?” Garrett asked softly.
“No, it never truly stops hurting,” Hannah answered plainly, “but it does become far easier to carry if you stop making the pain entirely about yourself.”
Garrett looked into her eyes and absorbed her profound wisdom with complete humility.
“I am actively trying to learn how to do that every single day,” Garrett promised softly.
“You do it by keeping your focus entirely on what those innocent boys need from you,” she explained gently.
“And what about keeping my focus on what you need from me?” Garrett asked tentatively.
Hannah folded the boys’ small autumn jackets over the back of a chair before answering his delicate question.
“Navigating our personal relationship is infinitely more complicated,” she admitted honestly.
“I am certainly not standing here expecting you to forgive my massive past mistakes today,” Garrett assured her quickly.
“That is good, because forgiveness takes time and proven consistency,” Hannah noted pragmatically.
“What specific actions can I perform right now to help you?” Garrett asked humbly.
“Keep showing up consistently exactly like you promised you would,” Hannah commanded plainly.
“I will show up without fail,” Garrett swore firmly.
Hannah studied his determined facial expression for a long moment before coming to a firm decision.
“There is something critical that I need to disclose to you regarding the boys,” Hannah revealed quietly.
Garrett stood still and waited patiently for her to share the information.
“I uncovered an archived medical intake document from the hospital two nights ago,” Hannah explained, “it explicitly states that the boys were delivered on October fourteenth.”
Garrett’s brow furrowed in immediate logical confusion. “That is physically impossible based on our divorce records.”
“I know it seems impossible, but that is what the original hospital paper says,” Hannah insisted firmly.
“Are you completely certain it was not merely a simple clerical typing error made by a tired nurse?” Garrett rationalized logically.
“Every single public record we possess claims October twenty first, but this document says October fourteenth,” she repeated.
“Then it almost certainly was a typing error,” Garrett concluded pragmatically.
“This document was kept inside an official sealed hospital records folder,” Hannah countered with conviction.
Garrett’s facial expression transformed instantly as the high powered developer replaced the casual father figure.
His sharp mind immediately began analyzing the logical implications of her strange medical discovery.
“Where exactly did you obtain this physical document, Hannah?” Garrett demanded inquiringly.
“It was resting inside a locked metal box beneath my bed that I hadn’t opened in years,” she revealed.
“Who originally handed that locked box or file to you four years ago?” Garrett pressed further.
“I do not know who placed it among my personal discharge paperwork,” Hannah admitted honestly.
Garrett took a slow step closer to her, his sharp eyes narrowing with deep suspicion.
“Does this terrifying medical discrepancy have anything to do with my former chief of staff, Spencer Vance?” Garrett inquired directly.
Hannah felt a cold chill pass through her body as he uttered the exact name.
“There was a sealed white envelope resting beside the document bearing his written initials,” Hannah confirmed softly.
“The warning written on the front of the envelope explicitly says not to let you see the contents,” she added.
Garrett’s jaw clenched tightly as his facial features hardened into an expression of cold fury.
“Did you open that sealed envelope and read the contents inside?” Garrett asked directly.
“No, I have not opened it yet,” Hannah confessed softly.
“Why on earth have you not opened it to read the truth?” Garrett inquired in total surprise.
“Because I am terrified of what dark revelations might be resting inside,” she admitted honestly.
“I can easily hire elite private investigators to uncover every detail about Spencer Vance within twenty four hours,” Garrett offered aggressively.
Hannah’s brown eyes flashed with immediate stern warnings as she stepped back.
“That aggressive, controlling reaction is precisely what terrifies me about you, Garrett!” she warned sternly.
“I am not suggesting that I send corporate security teams to intimidate anyone,” Garrett attempted to clarify quickly.
“You are instinctually trying to seize complete corporate control of this situation!” Hannah accused him directly.
“I am simply offering to help us uncover the absolute truth regarding our sons,” Garrett defended himself.
“We will uncover the truth carefully, methodically, and together as equal partners,” Hannah established firmly.
Garrett looked down at his trembling hands, forcing himself to suppress his aggressive executive instincts.
His strong corporate instincts urged him to immediately launch a massive investigation, pull hospital archives, locate Spencer Vance, and force answers through legal pressure.
He could easily picture the strategic execution: private intelligence firms, medical records subpoenas, and corporate leverage.
However, he looked up and saw Hannah watching his every move with extreme caution.
She did not trust his motives yet, and one wrong aggressive move would destroy the delicate progress they had made.
He took a slow, deep breath and completely surrendered his desire to control the process.
“We will handle this together,” Garrett agreed softly with total humility.
“Together,” Hannah repeated with a resolute nod.
Garrett gathered his belongings and departed from her apartment a few minutes later without pushing further.
Hannah waited until his footsteps completely faded down the stairwell before returning to her bedroom.
She pulled the metal lockbox out from beneath her bed and retrieved the sealed white envelope once again.
She carried the envelope into the brightly lit kitchen and set it down on the table.
For several long minutes, she sat silently staring at Spencer Vance’s precise warning written on the paper.
Finally, she pulled out her phone and dialed the private phone number of the one person who could explain why his name was attached to the document.
Spencer Vance answered her call on the fifth ringing tone with a tired, heavy voice.
“Hannah?” Spencer answered cautiously, sounding far older than she remembered.
“You knew deep down that I would eventually make this phone call to you, didn’t you, Spencer?” Hannah asked directly.
“I have spent four long years wondering when this day would finally arrive,” Spencer confessed quietly over the line.
A cold shudder passed down Hannah’s spine as his confession confirmed her worst fears.
“Why did you leave that sealed envelope hidden among my official hospital discharge paperwork?” Hannah demanded firmly.
“Where exactly did you find that envelope after all these years?” Spencer asked evasively.
“I found it tucked inside my archived neonatal medical records box,” Hannah answered plainly.
Spencer went completely silent on the line for several long, agonizing seconds.
“What exact information did you place inside that envelope, Spencer?” Hannah pressed with demanding intensity.
“I placed documents inside that do not legally or morally belong to me,” Spencer answered cryptically.
“That cryptic response is not an actual answer to my direct question, Spencer!” Hannah raised her voice slightly.
“No, it is not a complete answer,” Spencer conceded with a heavy sigh.
Hannah gripped the sharp edge of her laminate kitchen table to steady her surging panic.
“Were my twin boys delivered on October fourteenth instead of October twenty first?” Hannah demanded directly.
Another long, agonizing silence filled the phone connection before Spencer finally responded.
“Yes, they were delivered on October fourteenth,” Spencer confessed quietly.
Hannah closed her eyes tightly as a quiet sob threatened to break from her throat.
“Why have I been repeatedly told for four long years that they were born on October twenty first?” Hannah demanded tearfully.
“Because October twenty first is the official date listed on the legally amended hospital birth certificates,” Spencer explained.
“Who on earth had the power to illegally amend my children’s official birth certificates?” Hannah inquired aggressively.
“I do not know the exact identity of the person who executed the final paperwork changes,” Spencer claimed.
“You personally signed your written initials to the warning message on that envelope!” Hannah pointed out fiercely.
“Yes, I wrote those initials and sealed that envelope myself,” Spencer acknowledged quietly.
“You explicitly instructed whoever found the envelope not to let Garrett see the contents inside!” Hannah reminded him.
“I did write those exact warning words,” Spencer confirmed flatly.
“Why would you keep such monumental information hidden from Garrett?” Hannah demanded in disbelief.
Spencer’s voice dropped to a quiet, intense whisper over the phone line.
“Because I genuinely believed that Garrett would completely destroy the critical evidence before understanding the full scope of what actually occurred,” Spencer revealed.
Hannah stood up from her chair so rapidly that the wooden legs scraped loudly against the linoleum floor.
“Destroy the evidence?” Hannah repeated in complete bewilderment.
“Not intentionally, of course,” Spencer clarified quickly, “Garrett trusted the wrong corporate people implicitly back then, and he would have aggressively confronted them before we could gather concrete proof.”
“Who are these ‘wrong corporate people’ you are referring to?” Hannah demanded sternly.
“I cannot adequately explain the full complexity of this situation over an unsecure phone line, Hannah,” Spencer declined.
“You have had four full years to explain this to me, Spencer!” Hannah confronted him with rising anger.
“I know I have taken four years, and I regret it every single day,” Spencer admitted humbly.
Her anger vibrated through the quiet room as she struggled to comprehend his total betrayal.
“You deliberately let me believe that Garrett callously abandoned me and his unborn children!” Hannah accused passionately.
“I never explicitly told you that Garrett wanted to abandon his children, Hannah,” Spencer defended weakly.
“You explicitly told me on the phone that he considered my pregnancy an unwanted complication and demanded a clean separation!” Hannah reminded him fiercely.
“Garrett did utter words demanding a swift, clean divorce finalized during those intense corporate meetings,” Spencer admitted.
“I was actively carrying his biological children when I called his office to talk to him!” Hannah shouted tearfully.
“I was fully aware that you were pregnant when you called the office,” Spencer confessed softly.
Hannah’s breath caught sharply in her throat as his sickening confession shattered her remaining assumptions.
“You were fully aware of my pregnancy during that phone call?” Hannah asked in absolute horror.
“Yes, I knew about the pregnancy,” Spencer answered quietly.
“Why in God’s name did you not inform Garrett immediately upon his return from London?” Hannah demanded in agony.
“Because I was explicitly commanded not to inform him by a higher authority,” Spencer revealed softly.
Hannah sank slowly back down into her wooden chair as the room seemed to tilt around her.
“Who commanded you to hide my pregnancy from Garrett?” Hannah asked in a hushed, terrified tone.
Spencer hesitated for several seconds before delivering the devastating truth.
“I was commanded to remain silent by Garrett’s mother, Mrs. Victoria Lawson,” Spencer confessed softly.
Hannah sat frozen in her chair as the sinister reality of his confession sank deep into her mind.
“Why would Victoria Lawson ever do something so monstrous to her own son and grandchildren?” Hannah whispered in shock.
“I do not possess knowledge of all her dark personal motivations,” Spencer admitted quietly.
“You clearly possess enough knowledge to explain the basics to me right now, Spencer!” Hannah demanded firmly.
“I know she strongly believed that your presence was actively destroying Garrett’s grand corporate future,” Spencer explained, “she believed that a baby would permanently bind Garrett to you, ruining his focus during a multi billion dollar international merger, and she believed any public scandal would destroy his executive standing.”
Hannah stared at the sealed white envelope resting on her kitchen table with fresh horror.
“Did Victoria Lawson personally pay someone to alter my twin boys’ hospital records?” Hannah inquired directly.
“I do not possess concrete physical proof that she personally paid off hospital officials,” Spencer answered cautiously, “but I strongly suspect someone with vast financial resources and high legal access altered those records to obscure the true delivery timeline.”
“Why would the exact birth date of October fourteenth matter so much to her scheme?” Hannah asked in confusion.
