By morning, I’d made a decision. I would return to work, arrange childcare, and begin saving whatever I could.
Dana helped me locate a childcare provider, and my manager agreed to discuss three morning shifts or longer evening hours. I scheduled the meeting for Thursday, and Ryan promised to watch the twins.
For the first time since the terminal, I felt a little hope.
Then Ryan came downstairs wearing an enormous smile and announced news that threatened to destroy the only escape plan I had.
PART 3: THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY HIS CAREER
Ryan entered the kitchen with a broad smile, looking happier than I’d seen him in months. I was preparing breakfast while Ava and Mia rested nearby, and I immediately sensed he had something important to announce.
“Great news, Claire! Holloway approved my transfer to a shore-based position!”
I stopped what I was doing and stared at him.
“What did you say?”
“No more spending months at sea. I’ll be working locally from now on, so I can finally come home every evening.”
Mr. Holloway was Ryan’s department manager, the man responsible for recommending his transfer. Before discovering my husband’s affairs, I would have celebrated the opportunity for us to spend more time together.
Now, however, the announcement filled me with dread. My plan depended on Ryan eventually returning to sea, giving me time to work, save money, and prepare a safe departure with our daughters.
Instead, he would be home every day.
“I’ve invited Holloway to dinner on Friday,” Ryan continued. “This promotion is important, so I need you to prepare something impressive. Don’t disappoint me.”
I forced myself to nod, knowing an argument would accomplish nothing.
On Thursday morning, I dressed for my meeting with my manager while the twins rested in their bassinets. Ryan had promised to watch them, but just before I was supposed to leave, he appeared carrying his car keys.
“I have errands to handle for the new position. You’ll need to reschedule your meeting.”
I stared at him.
“Ryan, you promised to stay with the girls.”
“This job supports our family, Claire. You should be helping me instead of making everything difficult.”
Before I could respond, he walked out.
Desperate, I called Gerald and explained that my appointment was less than forty minutes away. His response made it painfully clear that he considered my career far less important than his son’s.
“Ryan’s dealing with a major opportunity. Can’t your little job wait?”
I ended the call and contacted Dana, who immediately rearranged her schedule to help me. Thanks to her, I reached my appointment and accepted three morning shifts each week.
Afterward, we visited a childcare provider who could accommodate both girls. Unfortunately, the fees would consume most of my earnings, leaving barely enough for transportation, formula, and groceries.
When Dana examined my calculations, she offered me her spare bedroom.
“You and the girls can stay for six weeks. That’s what I can promise right now.”
Six weeks wasn’t much, but it was the first genuine opportunity I’d had to leave.
On Friday afternoon, Ryan accompanied me grocery shopping for Mr. Holloway’s dinner. As we carried the bags toward our front door, he stopped and looked at me sternly.
“Tonight needs to be perfect. Don’t embarrass me in front of my boss.”
I couldn’t hide my resentment.
“You mean I should smile and pretend you’re a wonderful husband while you impress him?”
“Claire, don’t start another argument.”
“Does Mr. Holloway know what you’ve been doing with other women during your cruises?”
Ryan laughed dismissively.
“It was just a few women. They were passengers, for goodness’ sake. We had some fun, and that was all.”
I froze, suddenly realizing he’d revealed something much more serious than infidelity.
“Passengers? You were sleeping with customers while you were working?”
Ryan shifted the grocery bags impatiently.
“Stop making everything sound so dramatic.”
“Could you lose your job for doing that?”
His expression darkened.
“Listen carefully, Claire. If I lose my income, you and the babies suffer too. So don’t do anything stupid.”
He walked inside, leaving me alone on the porch.
For months, Ryan had used our financial dependence to silence me. He believed that because I needed his salary, I would never dare challenge him.
But he’d overlooked something important.
Our doorbell camera had recorded the entire conversation, including his admission about the passengers.
That evening, Dana arrived to collect Ava and Mia. I packed their belongings and quietly placed my own suitcase beside the front door.
She noticed it immediately.
“Claire, are you leaving tonight?”
I nodded.
“Then come with us now. You don’t need to stay for this dinner.”
Through the window, I could see Ryan arranging glasses, preparing to impress the man who controlled his career.
I looked back at Dana.
“There’s something I need to finish first.”
She hugged me before taking the twins to her apartment. I kissed both daughters goodbye and watched them leave.
Then I returned inside, checked the recording on my phone, and waited.
At seven o’clock, Mr. Holloway arrived for dinner, completely unaware that Ryan’s carefully planned celebration was about to become the most disastrous evening of his career.
PART 4: THE DINNER THAT ENDED HIS CAREER
At exactly seven o’clock, Mr. Holloway arrived at our house carrying an expensive bottle of wine. Ryan greeted him enthusiastically, wearing the charming smile he always used when trying to impress someone important.
Gerald joined us shortly afterward, and the four of us gathered around the dining table. Ryan had spent the entire afternoon preparing for this evening, convinced that a successful dinner would secure his new position.
Throughout the meal, he played the role of a devoted husband and proud father. He spoke warmly about Ava and Mia, described how excited he was to spend more time at home, and repeatedly praised the company’s decision to transfer him ashore.
I listened quietly, remembering how he’d abandoned his promise to watch our daughters just one day earlier.
Halfway through dinner, Gerald raised his wineglass.
“To my son, who understands that family should always come first. This new position will finally allow him to be present for his wife and daughters.”
Mr. Holloway smiled approvingly.
“That’s wonderful news. Claire, you must be thrilled.”
Ryan turned toward me, clearly expecting me to support his carefully constructed image.
“Tell him, sweetheart. This opportunity is exactly what our family needs.”
I slowly placed my fork beside my plate.
“Mr. Holloway, may I ask you something?”
He nodded politely.
“Of course, Claire.”
I looked directly at him.
“Does your company permit employees to have romantic relationships with passengers while they’re working aboard your ships?”
Ryan’s smile disappeared instantly.
“Claire.”
Gerald shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
“This is hardly appropriate dinner conversation.”
But Mr. Holloway was no longer smiling. He studied my expression before answering.
“Why are you asking me that?”
I placed my phone on the table.
“Because my husband admitted something yesterday, and I believe you deserve to hear it.”
Ryan leaned forward, his face tightening.
“Don’t do this, Claire.”
I pressed play.
His own voice filled the dining room.
“It was just a few women. They were passengers, for goodness’ sake. We had some fun, and that was all.”
The recording ended, leaving an uncomfortable silence.
Mr. Holloway slowly turned toward Ryan.
“Is that true?”
Ryan’s face went pale.
