And then Spencer’s phone rang. My attorney’s name appeared on the screen. Rebecca Collins. My ex-husband answered without knowing the call had nothing to do with our divorce. It was to inform him of a financial investigation that could change the fate of his entire family forever.
PART 3: THE CALL THAT EXPOSED THE FAKE PREGNANCY AND THE WHITMORES’ MILLION-DOLLAR SECRET
“Mr. Whitmore, this is Rebecca Collins, Claire’s attorney. I need to inform you that we have formally filed documentation relating to several transactions involving the family trust.”
Spencer stood motionless, still trying to process the doctor’s words.
“What transactions?”
“Asset transfers, documents with altered dates, and authorization requests my client never signed.”
Victoria tried to snatch the phone away.
“Don’t listen to that woman! Claire wants to destroy our family!”
But Rebecca continued.
“We have also provided investigators with information that raises questions about certain medical bills submitted in Bianca Reed’s name.”
The doctor looked up.
“Those bills must be preserved. Our clinic is already investigating the unauthorized use of its documentation.”
Spencer turned slowly toward Bianca.
“Tell me you didn’t make up our baby.”
She started to cry.
“I was going to explain!”
“Explain what? That you’ve been lying to me for months?”
Charles cut in furiously.
“Enough! We can settle this privately.”
Then Grandmother Eleanor, who had been silent all along, tapped her cane gently on the floor.
“Charles, I want to know what any of this has to do with my late husband’s trust.”
Nobody answered.
Rebecca heard the question through the phone.
“Mrs. Whitmore, that is precisely what we need to review: an amendment filed after the supposed pregnancy was announced.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
The document sought to accelerate certain distributions from the trust, using the birth of the next Whitmore heir as justification.
Eleanor looked at her son.
“You tried to dispose of that money without consulting me?”
Charles bowed his head.
Meanwhile, my plane was landing in France. Emma woke as she saw the first lights of Paris through the window.
“Mom, will we be happy here?”
I kissed her forehead.
“We’re going to build a much calmer life, sweetheart.”
Then I received a message from Rebecca.
“The clinic confirmed Bianca was not pregnant. Spencer knows about the investigation. But we found something else.”
I opened the attachment.
It was a communication sent from Charles’s office eight months earlier.
It contained instructions to look into my old family assets in France.
I felt a chill.
Those documents specifically mentioned the townhouse inherited from my grandfather.
And a loan application that supposedly used that property as collateral.
But I had never authorized any such transaction.
Seconds later, Rebecca wrote again.
“Claire, someone tried to file documents related to your Paris home. We need to verify their authenticity immediately.”
I looked at Emma, who was smiling with excitement, suspecting nothing.
I had crossed the ocean believing we had finally left the Whitmores behind.
But now I understood that their plan might have reached the one place where my children and I had hoped to feel safe.
