My High School Crush Turned Out To Be My Son’ S Closest Friend, And I Was Completely Unaware Of His Intentions.

My high school crush turned out to be my son’s closest friend, and I was completely unaware of his intentions.
My 14-year-old son, Daniel, has recently taken up soccer. This once-reserved child has become quite passionate—tracking stats, practicing drills, watching highlights… and especially admiring his coach, Charles.
Though I didn’t yet know Charles personally, I felt thankful for him.
One evening, after a crucial match, I waited for Daniel in the locker room. He approached me beaming with genuine happiness, accompanied by a man I never imagined I would see again.
“What are you doing next to my son?” I inquired.
“Mom… this is my coach, Charles,” my son responded awkwardly.
The man standing next to Daniel was more than just his coach.
He was my first love, the only person I ever truly cared for. After graduation, he left for a prestigious university, while I married soon after and had Daniel.
Following our unexpected reunion, Charles began spending even more time with my son.
He took the team on outdoor adventures and held regular training sessions. After each defeat, he was there to lift Daniel’s spirits.
However, one game shifted everything. Daniel took a serious fall and injured his knee. The doctors managed to save his joint so he could walk without a limp, but his sports career came to an end.
I dedicated all my spare time by his hospital bedside, offering comfort and care.
One evening, spotting Charles there, I said to him, “Daniel’s resting. Come back tomorrow.”
“No,” he cut in. “I’m here for you.”
Charles appeared ashen, as though he hadn’t rested in days. He seemed anxious and couldn’t look me in the eye.
Then, in a low voice, he uttered:
“There’s A VERY IMPORTANT THING I need to tell you. Please… listen to me.”
Before I could respond, he pulled an old, worn envelope from his jacket pocket—with MY NAME ON IT.
