I looked directly at Dad.<\/p>\n

Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n
Then Serena delivered the part she had clearly been waiting to say.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were specifically excluded.\u201d<\/p>\n
Julian laughed again.<\/p>\n
This time louder.<\/p>\n
There was unmistakable satisfaction in it.<\/p>\n
He said something to Serena that I couldn\u2019t quite hear.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat was that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
There was some shuffling on their end.<\/p>\n
Then Julian\u2019s voice came much closer to the phone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said you\u2019re finally out of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad\u2019s fingers tightened around his coffee mug.<\/p>\n
Julian wasn\u2019t finished.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo more showing up every few months and pretending you\u2019re the devoted daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
That sentence hit harder than I expected.<\/p>\n
For years, Serena had loved telling people I was the daughter who \u201cran away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Apparently moving three states away for work counted as abandoning everyone, even though I called Dad several times a week, paid for plane tickets whenever he needed me, and had spent the last forty-eight hours dealing with something Serena knew absolutely nothing about.<\/p>\n
I could have defended myself.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Because there was something much more interesting happening across the table.<\/p>\n
Dad slowly placed his coffee cup down.<\/p>\n

The ceramic base touched the wooden tabletop so softly that Julian and Serena probably couldn\u2019t hear it.<\/p>\n
But I could.<\/p>\n
And that tiny sound worried me more than if Dad had shouted.<\/p>\n
My father wasn\u2019t a man who exploded easily.<\/p>\n
When he was angry, he became quiet.<\/p>\n
Very quiet.<\/p>\n
Serena kept talking, completely unaware.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, Clara, I\u2019m calling because we\u2019re trying to handle this like adults. Julian already has someone coming to evaluate the truck. We\u2019ve contacted the bank, and we\u2019re going through Dad\u2019s office today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n
His office.<\/p>\n
I almost smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the house?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously we\u2019re keeping it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Julian called from the background, \u201cMight renovate the kitchen!\u201d<\/p>\n
They both laughed.<\/p>\n
Dad didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
His face had become eerily calm.<\/p>\n
Serena continued, \u201cThere are probably some personal things of yours still in your old bedroom. I\u2019ll box them up. Julian can leave them by the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow thoughtful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Serena missed the sarcasm.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew you\u2019d understand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad looked at me and silently mouthed, \u201cUnderstand?\u201d<\/p>\n
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing.<\/p>\n
Julian apparently grabbed the phone again.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Clara?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Julian?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t make this difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared through the kitchen window at the thin layer of frost covering my backyard.<\/p>\n
\u201cDifficult?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t start challenging the will or demanding things that aren\u2019t yours. Serena is Dad\u2019s eldest daughter. She stayed close to home. She deserves this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad slowly leaned back in his chair.<\/p>\n
Julian continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou made your choice years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
Serena murmured something approvingly.<\/p>\n
Then Julian added the sentence that finally changed Dad\u2019s expression.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour father obviously knew who really loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n
The kitchen became completely silent.<\/p>\n
Dad\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n
Not hurt.<\/p>\n
Not angry.<\/p>\n
Something colder.<\/p>\n
I had seen that expression only twice in my life.<\/p>\n
Both times, somebody had deeply regretted what happened next.<\/p>\n
I reached toward the phone.<\/p>\n
For a second, I considered ending the call.<\/p>\n
Dad stopped me.<\/p>\n
He raised his hand.<\/p>\n
