There was a brief pause, and when Daniel spoke again his voice had changed from anger to that careful tone he used whenever he wanted to make something unreasonable sound administrative.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis doesn\u2019t have to get ugly, Emily. Sign the papers, return the keys, and we can figure out a schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at the ownership documents on my screen.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout the keys,\u201d I said, \u201cyou may want to speak to an attorney before you make any more demands.\u201d<\/p>\n
He laughed.<\/p>\n

\nI could hear Tiffany say something behind him, too muffled for me to make out.<\/p>\n
