Part 3: The Papers
\nLily placed the folder on my kitchen table and sat across from me.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom,\u201d she said carefully, \u201cI didn\u2019t want to show you this while you were recovering, but you need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n
I opened the folder.<\/p>\n
Inside were bank statements, old loan records, copies of checks, and a handwritten list in Henry\u2019s familiar block letters.<\/p>\n
My heart tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom Dad\u2019s metal file box in the garage. You asked me to clean it out last month, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded slowly.<\/p>\n
On the first page was Marcus\u2019s name.<\/p>\n
Tuition help.<\/p>\n
Car repair.<\/p>\n
Down payment assistance.<\/p>\n
Emergency business loan.<\/p>\n
Credit card payoff.<\/p>\n
The numbers kept going.<\/p>\n
Lily looked at me with sadness in her eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, Dad tracked everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
I added the amounts once, then again because I thought I had made a mistake.<\/p>\n
I had not.<\/p>\n
Marcus had taken $96,800 from us over the years.<\/p>\n
Some had been gifts. Some had been loans. Some had been money he promised to repay and never mentioned again.<\/p>\n
At the bottom of Henry\u2019s list was one sentence:<\/p>\n
If Elaine ever needs help, remind Marcus what family already did for him.<\/p>\n
I pressed my hand to my mouth.<\/p>\n
Lily reached across the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n
She slid another document toward me.<\/p>\n
It was a copy of the deed to my house.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMarcus called a real estate attorney two months ago,\u201d she said. \u201cHe asked about transferring your home into his name to \u2018make estate planning easier.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
My stomach turned cold.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe told me he wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lily opened another page.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd Vanessa asked someone at the county office whether a surviving parent could be declared unable to manage property after a medical diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a moment, I could not speak.<\/p>\n
My eyesight had become cloudy, but Marcus and Vanessa had not seen a mother in danger.<\/p>\n
They had seen a chance.<\/p>\n
Lily\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think he came last night just because of the post. I think he came because he realized other people are watching now.\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat very still.<\/p>\n
Then I reached for my phone and called Henry\u2019s old attorney, Mr. Coleman.<\/p>\n
By noon, Lily and I were in his office.<\/p>\n
By three, I had signed a new will, a medical power of attorney, and a legal document making Lily\u2014not Marcus\u2014my emergency contact and decision-maker if anything happened to me.<\/p>\n
Mr. Coleman looked at me over his glasses.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n
I thought of Marcus standing in my living room, angry about embarrassment instead of afraid for me.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m certain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Part 4: The Family Meeting
\nMarcus found out two days later.<\/p>\n
He arrived again with Vanessa, but this time Lily was already sitting beside me at the kitchen table, and Mr. Coleman\u2019s business card was lying in plain view.<\/p>\n
Marcus looked from me to Lily.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI protected myself,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
Vanessa laughed sharply.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom your own son?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cFrom people who only remember I\u2019m family when they want something.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marcus\u2019s face flushed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re really choosing her over me?\u201d<\/p>\n
Lily stiffened, but I raised one hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am choosing the person who showed up when I was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m your son.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd she is my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vanessa rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s adopted.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room went cold.<\/p>\n
Lily\u2019s face changed, but before she could answer, I stood.<\/p>\n
\u201cSay that in my house again, and you will never step inside it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.<\/p>\n
