Marriage teaches you to explain things away long before it teaches you when to stop.<\/p>\n

The cold comment becomes exhaustion.<\/p>\n
The first thing that never quite makes sense gets pushed aside because trusting your spouse feels more reasonable than suspecting them.<\/p>\n
But there are moments when a hundred small excuses suddenly stop standing separately.<\/p>\n
They become a pattern.<\/p>\n
My wife had spent months asking oddly specific questions about what my father controlled, what required his approval, and what would happen if he became unable or unwilling to manage those responsibilities.<\/p>\n
I had taken those questions as curiosity about our future.<\/p>\n
Now I heard them differently.<\/p>\n
My father heard them too when I repeated a few.<\/p>\n

My father lifted the torn halves.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why did you destroy this?\u201d<\/p>\n
She had no quick answer.<\/p>\n
That was new.<\/p>\n
Her eyes moved from him to me, then to the packet.<\/p>\n

The housekeeper stepped closer to the edge of the room.<\/p>\n

My father stood beside me and compared them slowly.<\/p>\n
