Three days before I put my father in the ground.

Billy’s text chimed on my phone while I was standing shivering in the parking lot of the funeral home, trying to decide between white lilies and hydrangeas. I stared at the photo of the six-hundred-thousand-dollar colonial and the sickening caption beneath it.

Something to look forward to after all this sadness.

I felt that same cold, reptilian dread move through my gut again. I shoved the phone deep into my purse and walked back inside to approve the floral arrangements. I simply did not have the emotional strength that day to fight a war I wasn’t yet willing to admit had already begun.

Then came the funeral itself.

We buried Silas Renfrew on a bleak, gray Saturday morning in late January. The service was small, plain, and exactly what he would have wanted. No fuss. Just a few of his old engineering colleagues telling quiet, dry stories about his legendary stubbornness and his refusal to ever, under any circumstances, accept the first bid on a project.

Afterward, everyone drove back to my father’s house on Boatcher Ridge for the reception. Forty or so people milled about, casseroles crowding the kitchen counters, coffee going tepid in good china cups. Over it all hung the particular, thick, suffocating hush of a house whose owner is newly, permanently gone.

And that is where my husband, holding a tumbler of my dead father’s good bourbon, standing in the middle of my dead father’s living room, decided the moment had come to make a toast.

I missed the beginning of it. I was in the kitchen wrapping a plate of ham for one of my father’s elderly neighbors. But I felt the atmosphere in the house suddenly shift. It was the way a room changes when someone says something horribly inappropriate—a sudden, airless vacuum.

I stepped into the doorway, the foil-wrapped plate still in my hands.

There was my husband, his glass hoisted high, his face flushed with bourbon and, God help him, pure, unadulterated relief.

“And Silas, rest his soul, was a good man,” Dermot projected to the silent room. “A generous man. And I know he’d want his family taken care of. So, here’s to new beginnings. Odette’s inheritance is finally going to get us out from under, pay off what we owe, and let us all breathe again. To Silas!”

A few people lifted their glasses on pure, awkward social reflex, hoisting them an inch before their minds caught up with their arms and hastily set them back down. Most just stared in abject horror.

My father’s oldest friend, a retired bridge engineer named Ford Whitt, set his glass down on the side table with slow, deliberate disgust and stared hard at the carpet.

And Billy, standing proudly at her son’s shoulder, beamed like he had just been awarded a Nobel Prize.

I stood in the doorway, paralyzed. Every single person in that living room turned slowly to look at me, waiting to see what I would do.

I would love to tell you I said something magnificent. I would love to tell you I threw the plate at his head and threw them both out into the snow. I have replayed that agonizing moment a hundred times in my head and imagined a hundred perfect, devastating responses.

But in the actual moment, standing over the still-fresh memory of my beloved father while my husband publicly celebrated the spending of his life’s work, I could not make a single sound. My throat simply closed.

And in that closing, in that suffocating silence, I made a decision. It was the same cold, quiet decision I suspect a lot of you have had to make at least once when the floor falls out from under you.

The decision to stop reacting, and start watching.

Because I understood, standing in that doorway, that Dermot had just handed me the entire, ugly truth of what he was and what he had been planning all along, wrapped and delivered. I knew the single smartest thing I could do was let him keep believing I was too grief-stunned to have caught the betrayal.

So, I forced a small, tight, impeccable hostess’s smile.

“Thank you all so much for coming,” I said, my voice eerily calm. “There’s fresh coffee in the kitchen, and please, take a plate home. We have far too much food.”

I turned around, walked back to the kitchen sink, and turned the water on full blast so no one would hear that my hands were shaking violently.

Billy followed me like a shark smelling blood. A minute later, all fake warmth and velvet, she laid her hand over mine on the counter.

“He didn’t mean it to come out like that, sweetheart,” she purred. “You know Dermot, no filter on that boy. But he’s not wrong that this is a wonderful chance for all of us. Family helps family. Your daddy would understand that better than anyone.”

And then, because she simply could not help herself—because the greed always eventually outruns the manners—she leaned in closer.

“That house I sent you? I already called the listing agent. She thinks if we move before spring, we could get it well under asking. I told her we’d have the funds soon.”

We’d have the funds soon.

Staring at the cooling coffee urn from my father’s funeral, I replied, “Let’s not talk about houses today, Billy.”

She squeezed my hand as though I were being brave, then strutted back out to join her son. I stood at that sink and understood, fully and finally, that in their minds, they had already spent my father’s entire life’s work. They had chosen the house. They had called the agent. They had drafted their entire future.

They were simply waiting on the money. Which meant they were simply waiting on me. Which meant it had genuinely never once occurred to either of them that I might have a single word to say about any of it.

Here is what they did not know. Here, if I am being perfectly honest, is what I did not yet fully know either.

My father had known. My father had been watching Dermot like a hawk for well over a year. And my father, being precisely who he was, had not confronted a soul. He had done something infinitely more effective than a screaming match.

He had measured twice, and he had quietly, methodically built something designed specifically to hold the crushing weight he saw coming.

Chapter 3: The Toast The Biltmore Forest house listing arrived first.
