It was a beautiful, two-story craftsman house with a perfectly manicured lawn. The porch light was on. It looked like a sanctuary. He wore his reading glasses, a half-smile playing on his lips. \u201cWell, look who decided to grace us with her presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Dad,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>He walked over and kissed the top of my head. His beard scratched my forehead, just like it always did. But this time, I felt the cold, hard lump of his service weapon holstered at his waist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re glad you\u2019re here, sweetheart,\u201d Martin said, his voice deep and smooth. \u201cActually, your mother and I were just talking about you. We\u2019ve decided to take a spontaneous family vacation. We\u2019re flying out to South America tomorrow. I already packed a bag for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood ran cold. The tickets. Margaret was right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow,\u201d I feigned surprise, forcing my lips to curl upward. \u201cTomorrow? That\u2019s so sudden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is short, Claire,\u201d he said, his eyes locking onto mine. There was a dark, calculating intensity in his gaze that I had never noticed before. He was scanning me. Searching for a crack in my armor. \u201cBy the way, did you ever get the results of that silly spit-test you and Emma mailed off?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dug my fingernails into my palms to keep them from trembling. \u201cNo. Emma said they backed up the processing. Probably another month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin held my gaze for three agonizing seconds. Then, the tension broke. He smiled warmly. \u201cShame. Well, sit down. Let\u2019s eat. Oh, and Claire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached out his hand, palm up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me take your phone. Family rule for this trip. Total disconnection.
