I had no choice. Refusing would have blown my cover instantly. I watched him power it down and slide it into his chest pocket. My lifeline to Margaret, to Daniel, to the outside world—gone.

Dinner was a masterclass in psychological torture. Elaine chattered excitedly about the weather in Argentina, oblivious to the fact that her husband was a monster, or perhaps deeply complicit in her own delusion. I chewed my chicken, the meat turning to ash in my mouth. I smiled. I nodded. I played the perfect, loving daughter.

By 11:30 PM, the house finally fell silent.

I lay in my childhood bed, staring at the glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to my ceiling. They had put them there when I was five because I was afraid of the dark. They stole me, and then they comforted me. The duality of their twisted love threatened to fracture my sanity.

At 2:00 AM, I silently slipped out of bed. I didn’t put on shoes. I crept down the hallway, perfectly avoiding the third floorboard that always creaked.

The basement door was locked. It always was. It was Martin’s “Home Office”—a place off-limits to everyone, where he supposedly kept sensitive police case files.

But I wasn’t five years old anymore. I knew he kept the spare brass key taped to the underside of the hallway smoke detector.

I retrieved the key, my hands slick with cold sweat. It slid into the lock with a soft click. I pushed the door open and descended into the darkness.

The basement smelled of old paper, damp concrete, and gun oil. I didn’t dare turn on the overhead lights. Using a tiny penlight I’d kept in my backpack, I swept the room. It was meticulously organized. Filing cabinets, a heavy oak desk, and in the far corner, bolted to the concrete floor, a heavy steel digital safe.

I knelt before it. What’s the code?

I tried my birthday. The one they gave me. Error. I tried their anniversary. Error. I tried his police badge number. Error.

I closed my eyes, fighting a wave of panic. I only had a few more tries before the system locked me out. Think like a psychopath. Think like a man whose entire life is built on a single, defining secret.

I typed in the date of the car crash. October 14th.

The light blinked green. Heavy metallic bolts disengaged with a mechanical thud.

I swung the heavy door open. Inside were stacks of cash, a few spare passports, and a small, tarnished cedar box.

My hands trembled as I lifted the lid of the box.

Sitting on top of a folded, blood-stained piece of blue cloth was a tiny silver bracelet. I picked it up. Inscribed on the metal, blackened by time, was the name: NATALIE PIERCE.

A sob caught in my throat. It was real. God, it was all real.

Beneath the bracelet was a small, leather-bound notebook. The leather was cracked. I flipped it open to a bookmarked page. It was Martin’s handwriting, jagged and frantic.

Oct 14. 23:15 hours. Route 7. Car off the embankment. Driver deceased on impact. The woman is pinned in the passenger seat. She’s bleeding out. She asked me to save her baby in the back. I looked at the child. She looks just like the one Elaine lost last month. No one else is here. My radio is off. I am sitting on the hood of my cruiser. The woman in the car is still crying for help. I will wait until she stops. Then, I will take our daughter home.

Bile surged up my throat. He didn’t just find me. He let my mother bleed to death in the dark while he sat there and listened.

“You always were too curious for your own good, Claire.”

The basement lights snapped on, blindingly bright.

I spun around, dropping the notebook.

Martin stood at the bottom of the stairs. He wasn’t wearing his glasses anymore. In his right hand, he held his heavy police issue Glock 19.

And he was pointing it right at my chest.

Chapter 3: The Midnight Hunt I handed him the phone.
