Captain Ava Rostova\u2019s voice was chewed to pieces by the deafening thrum of the helicopter rotors. Below her, the earth was still groaning. A twisted girder of raw steel pinned my left femur against the shattered concrete of the school foundation. Hot blood from my torn heavy-duty work pants pooled into the fissures of the ruin. With every fragmented breath, a fractured rib drove a hot spike into my lung.<\/p>\n

About six feet away, Isla Reyes sat on a canvas stretcher. She had a superficial scrape on her kneecap. Less than three minutes prior, she had been walking unassisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy chest\u2026 it hurts. I can\u2019t breathe,\u201d Isla gasped. Her manicured hand clamped onto the mud-stained sleeve of Kalin Shaw\u2014my husband. With trembling fingers, she extracted a laminated medical information sheet from her designer field bag.<\/p>\n

A combat medic knelt, squinting at the document through the swirling dust. \u201cHistory of malignant arrhythmia,\u201d the medic yelled over the engine roar. \u201cAt this altitude, under this adrenaline load, she could arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kalin\u2019s jaw tightened. The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n

The radio strapped to the Captain\u2019s chest crackled with static. \u201cIf the north pass holds, ten minutes tops for the second chopper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Captain Rostova checked her altimeter and wrist chronometer. \u201cYou have ten seconds. The cloud ceiling is collapsing. We are lifting off now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kalin finally looked at me. To be painfully precise, his eyes darted in my general direction for a fraction of a second. Then, without a word, he scooped Isla into his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cKalin!\u201d I screamed, the sound tearing my throat.<\/p>\n

He paused, glancing over his shoulder. \u201cThe next one is ten minutes out, Alara. You have the medics here. I\u2019ll be right back.\u201d<\/p>\n

He did not ask if I could hold on. He did not wait for the answer to a question he was too terrified to ask. Captain Rostova was already physically shoving them into the fuselage. Kalin cradled the back of Isla\u2019s head, shielding her from the rotor wash, and ducked inside.<\/p>\n

My fingers clamped around a jagged piece of rebar. If someone, anyone, had just applied a tourniquet to my thigh, the hemorrhagic shock might have been delayed. But Kalin never looked back. The skids left the earth. Through the scratched plexiglass window, my eyes locked with my husband\u2019s as he ascended into the gray sky.<\/p>\n

I waited for the mountain to send another savior. Ten minutes bled into twenty.<\/p>\n

Then, a sickening crack echoed from the summit. A secondary landslide, a tidal wave of pulverized rock and wet mud, surged down the slope.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvacuate! Fall back!\u201d the radio screamed.<\/p>\n

The medic holding my hand was violently yanked away by a squadmate. \u201cVance, we\u2019ll be back!\u201d he promised, his voice cracking.<\/p>\n

But the earth had other plans. The concrete foundation buckled. The ground beneath me unzipped like a fragile seam, and I plummeted, along with the steel beam, into the suffocating dark.
