She wore a muted beige suit, her makeup applied to emphasize dark circles under her eyes. The ultimate victim.<\/p>\n
I sat in the front row, a digital remote resting in my palm. The massive projection screen behind the tribunal lit up.<\/p>\n
First, I displayed Dr. Thorne\u2019s handwritten triage log. Red vs. Yellow. A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.<\/p>\n
Next, Aaron projected the metadata audit of Dr. Finch\u2019s server, tracking the $40,000 payment made three months prior to the disaster, and the corresponding timestamp of the words malignant arrhythmia being inserted into her file.<\/p>\n
Finally, I played a salvaged, garbled audio file from a rescue worker\u2019s body camera.<\/p>\n
\u201cVance is bleeding heavily. Let\u2019s get her on first,\u201d the medic\u2019s voice crackled.
\nImmediately, Isla\u2019s voice cut over it, sharp and panicked: \u201cWait, I really can\u2019t! I have a history of cardiac arrest! It\u2019s in my file! Kalin, tell them!\u201d<\/p>\n
The amphitheater descended into absolute, suffocating silence.<\/p>\n
Isla gripped the microphone, her knuckles white. \u201cI was terrified! A mountain was falling on us. Anyone would have panicked. I just wanted to live!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t just panic, Isla,\u201d I said, my voice echoing through the chamber without the aid of a microphone. \u201cYou premeditated a medical fraud to ensure you would always be treated as the most valuable life in the room. And when the mountain fell, you executed that fraud flawlessly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Isla spun toward Kalin, her eyes pleading. \u201cKalin, you carried me. You chose me. You promised to protect me!\u201d<\/p>\n
Kalin stood up slowly. He looked utterly aged, a man stripped of every comforting illusion he had clung to for a decade. \u201cI made the choice to put you on that helicopter,\u201d Kalin said, his voice grave. \u201cThat sin is mine. But I did not forge a document to steal another woman\u2019s right to live.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s fine!\u201d Isla shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me, the polished veneer finally cracking into something ugly and feral. \u201cLook at her! She has a company, she has a fianc\u00e9! She survived! Why do you want to destroy me when you have everything?!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause,\u201d I replied, standing up and leaning my weight onto my cane, \u201cmy survival does not absolve you of my murder.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tribunal erupted. The chairman slammed his gavel, immediately suspending Isla Reyes from all operational duties pending a federal fraud investigation.<\/p>\n
During the recess, I found Kalin standing alone by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Seattle skyline.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought I lost you to an act of God,\u201d he said without turning around. \u201cBut I lost you to my own arrogance. I thought I had time to save everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou couldn\u2019t do the math, Kalin,\u201d I said softly.<\/p>\n
He turned, a solitary tear tracking down his weathered cheek. \u201cIf I had put you on first\u2026 we would have had children. We would have built an empire.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you had put me on first,\u201d I corrected him, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t know the exact tensile strength of my own spine. I wouldn\u2019t know the man who loves me enough to let me walk through the fire alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
I reached into my pocket and placed a small, velvet pouch on the windowsill. Inside was the platinum wedding band he had given me, returned to me by his lawyers during the asset dissolution.<\/p>\n
\u201cI forgive you, Kalin,\u201d I said, and for the first time in seven years, it was the absolute truth. \u201cBut I am never coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n
I turned and walked away. My stride was uneven, accompanied by the rhythmic click of my cane, but I did not stumble.
