It began as a low, guttural moan, escalated rapidly through three octaves, cracked violently in the middle, and rebounded with the sheer, unbridled terror of a Victorian woman witnessing a ghost.

Frank dropped the Chardonnay. It shattered on the hallway floor, pooling like liquid gold. Inside the kitchen, a spoon clattered against the tile.

I sprinted through the doorway.

Patricia had managed to scale one of our expensive velvet dining chairs and was balancing precariously on the seat. The missing third lobster had been located.

It was currently clamped onto the wide, flowing hem of Patricia’s pristine white linen trousers. It hadn’t pinched her flesh—it was merely gripping the loose fabric near her ankle like a hitchhiker—but Patricia was entirely unaware of this crucial distinction.

“GET IT OFF ME!” she bellowed, kicking her leg with the frantic energy of a can-can dancer.

Daniel stood a useless six feet away, wielding a pair of silicone-tipped salad tongs like a priest holding a crucifix. “Mom, stop moving! You’re agitating it!”

“I AM BEING CONSUMED ALIVE, DANIEL!”

“It’s not eating you! It’s just holding your pants!”

Frank pushed past me into the kitchen, took one sweeping look at his wife performing a manic jig with a crustacean appendage, and burst into deep, booming, uncontrollable laughter. He had to brace himself against the doorframe to stay upright.

“Frank! Help me!” she shrieked.

“I’m sorry, Pat,” Frank wheezed, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. He was explicitly not sorry.

Patricia delivered one final, violently powerful kick. The lobster lost its grip on the linen. It launched through the air, soared approximately three feet, and landed with a wet thwack against the base of the kitchen island. Unbothered, it immediately raised its claws and began skittering sideways across the floorboards.

Patricia screamed again, a sound that penetrated the drywall.

Outside, the neighborhood erupted. Mr. Jenkins’ Golden Retriever began barking hysterically. Across the street, another dog joined the chorus. I heard a car door slam aggressively.

From the side yard, Mr. Jenkins bellowed over the fence, “Hey! Is everything okay in there?!”

Patricia, deciding the chair was inadequate high ground, abandoned all dignity. I am not exaggerating: a sixty-two-year-old woman in white linen and wedge sandals scrambled atop my granite kitchen island, kneeling among spilled flour and scattered parsley.

“Patricia,” I said calmly, stepping over the wine puddle. “The animal is on the floor.”

“I CAN SEE THAT, ESME! YOU ARE NOT SAFE DOWN THERE!”

Then, she glanced toward the sink. The remaining three lobsters were still piled inside. One of them slowly lifted a banded claw in her direction.

Patricia pointed a trembling, manicured finger at it. “That one… that one is making direct eye contact with me.”

Frank was practically weeping with joy. “Pat, honey, they’re lobsters. They don’t have vendettas.”

“I know what they are, Frank!”

Suddenly, the lobster near the island shifted its weight and clicked its claws.

Patricia panicked. She blindly grabbed the nearest solid object on the island to use as a projectile. Tragically, she grabbed the “bread” Daniel had baked.

Calling it bread was a crime against wheat. It was a dense, pale, terrifyingly solid brick of baked dough.

She hurled it with the force of an Olympic shot-putter.

The bread impacted the floor six inches in front of the advancing lobster with a deafening CRACK that sounded exactly like a paving stone hitting concrete.

The lobster stopped dead in its tracks.

Everyone in the room froze.

Frank wiped his streaming eyes and stared at the cratered dough. “What the hell is that?”

Daniel, offended amidst the chaos, puffed out his chest. “It’s a rustic baguette.”

Frank barked out another laugh. “Son, you could bludgeon a home invader to death with that.”

By this point, the doorbell was ringing incessantly. It was Mr. Jenkins. Then, a sharp tapping echoed on the kitchen window. Our other neighbor, Carla, was peering through the glass, her smartphone raised and recording.

Patricia was still crouched on the granite island, clutching her chest. “Close the curtains!” she commanded frantically.

“Why?” Daniel asked.

“Because Beverly might still be out there!”

That was her primary concern. Not exsanguination by lobster claw. Not her son’s psychological break. Her overriding fear was that Beverly Watkins would discover her bespoke luxury luncheon was currently a scene from a low-budget monster movie.

Frank peered through the front blinds. “Bad news, Pat.”

Patricia went bone-white. “What?”

“Beverly hasn’t left the driveway.”

“Why?! Why is she lingering?!”

“Probably,” I interjected smoothly, “because you screamed as if you were being actively dismembered by a chainsaw.”

The threat of social annihilation was a potent antidote to fear. Patricia instantly scrambled down from the island, her terror of the crustaceans completely eclipsed by the terror of Beverly’s judgment. She smoothed her wrinkled blouse and turned to her son, her eyes blazing with maternal hellfire.

“Daniel,” she hissed. “Fix this. Now.”

Daniel looked around his domain. The floor was dusted with flour and shattered glass. The stove was covered in starchy water from boiling-over potatoes. Smoke drifted lazily from the oven. Six live lobsters held strategic positions around the room, and his bread was legally classified as a deadly weapon.

“How?” he whimpered.

Patricia snapped her head toward me, the expectation radiating off her. “Esme?”

I leaned back against the doorframe, crossing my arms. “No.”

She blinked, stunned by the refusal. “No?”

“Daniel is the chef today.”

“But why?!” she demanded, her voice breaking.

I looked at Daniel, who was staring at his shoes, then back to Patricia. “Because the comfort is over.”

Patricia looked between the two of us, sensing the marital landmine she had just stepped on. “What does that mean?”

So, I laid out the audit report. I kept my voice devoid of emotion as I detailed the Wednesday night ambush. The unilateral decision to divert half my paycheck to Megan. The mandate to cut back. The strict fifty-fifty division of all household labor and expenses. The canceled cleaners, the cheap coffee, the severed luxury lines.

I told her all of it.

Patricia listened in absolute, horrifying silence. She didn’t interrupt once.

When I finally finished, the silence in the kitchen was heavier than Daniel’s bread. Patricia slowly, methodically, rotated her body to face her son.

“You gave away half of Esme’s paycheck?” her voice was a lethal whisper.

Daniel rubbed his face, smearing flour across his forehead. “I didn’t give it away, Mom. Megan needs help. The twins—”

“Half?” she repeated, the volume rising.

“It’s temporary!”

Patricia thrust an arm out, gesturing violently at the dystopian wasteland of the kitchen. “Does this look temporary to you?!”

Frank chuckled. Daniel snapped, “Dad, shut up!”

Patricia looked genuinely, deeply appalled. “Daniel… do you comprehend what Esme does for a living?”

“Yes.”

“Do you comprehend what you do for a living?”

Daniel bristled. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means,” Patricia said slowly, enunciating every word, “that when one spouse professionally audits the operations of elite, multi-million-dollar restaurant groups, and the other spouse manages strip malls… perhaps the restaurant professional should retain executive control over the lobsters!”

I had to bite down hard on the inside of my cheek to keep from grinning.

Then, a secondary, far more devastating realization struck Patricia. She lunged forward and grabbed my arm. “Wait. Does this fifty-fifty nonsense mean… you are not curating our Sunday lunches anymore?”

“I’m afraid so. Sunday lunch is a comfort.”

Her mouth opened, closed, and opened again. She looked around the kitchen as if mourning the death of a beloved monarch. “But… what about Christmas dinner?”

“Comfort,” I replied.

“Thanksgiving?”

“Comfort.”

“My birthday dinner at the French bistro?!”

“Definitely comfort.”

Patricia placed a trembling hand over her heart. She turned back to Daniel, and the wrath radiating from her dwarfed her previous fear of the lobsters. “What have you done?”

“Mom, Megan has twins! She’s drowning!”

“I know she has twins, Daniel! I was in the delivery room when they were extracted!”

Frank snorted, trying and failing to disguise it as a cough.

Daniel looked utterly miserable. “We all need to sacrifice for the family, Mom.”

Patricia pointed a stiff finger directly at his chest. “Wonderful sentiment. Tell me, Daniel, what exactly are you sacrificing?”

Daniel opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

She waited. The silence stretched.

Finally, she turned to me. “Has he sacrificed anything?”

“He gave up his artisan coffee beans,” I noted helpfully. “And he’s ironing his own shirts.”

Patricia stared at him, her expression hardening into absolute disgust. “That is it? You unilaterally pledge thousands of dollars a month of your wife’s hard-earned salary to your sister, and your grand, noble contribution is suffering through supermarket coffee?”

When articulated by his own mother, the sheer inequity of his arrangement sounded profoundly pathetic.

Before Daniel could formulate a defense, a loud, obnoxious HONK pierced the air from outside.

Patricia jumped. “Oh, sweet heaven.”

Frank peeked through the blinds. “She’s rolling down her window, Pat.”

Patricia grabbed handfuls of her own hair. “She can smell weakness. She knows.”

“Pat,” Frank reasoned, “she’s seventy feet away inside a sealed Lexus.”

“You don’t know Beverly’s olfactory capabilities!”

The doorbell rang again. Then, Beverly’s syrupy, venomous voice floated through the cracked front door. “Patricia, dear? Is everything quite all right in there? I heard… a commotion.”

Patricia dropped to a crouch, whispering fiercely, “Nobody move a muscle.”

With Beverly at the gates and the kitchen in ruins, who will save the family’s shredded dignity?

Chapter 4: The Kitchen Tribunal I have audited kitchens where line cooks have accidentally severed digits, and I have never heard a human vocal cords produce the sound Patricia made. …

[1

post-13130","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-family-drama-stories
["GET
