By nightfall, Jason\u2019s world had entirely evaporated. His company employees, discovering the accounts were frozen and their paychecks were bouncing, looted the office electronics and threatened to call the Labor Board. He was locked out of his apartment. He was a phantom.<\/p>\n
Hungry, exhausted, and terrified, he wandered the shadowy concrete labyrinth of downtown Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
He had one final, terrifying secret he had kept from me. To keep his failing startup looking profitable to Lily, he had borrowed a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from an underground syndicate. And today was collection day.<\/p>\n
As Jason ducked into a narrow, damp alleyway to avoid the glow of a passing police cruiser, heavy footsteps echoed behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn extension?\u201d Tony chuckled, a dry, grating sound. He snapped his fingers.<\/p>\n
Before Jason could react, one of the enforcers lunged, grabbing him by the lapels of his ruined Tom Ford suit and slamming him brutally against the masonry. The breath exploded from Jason\u2019s lungs.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my line of work, we don\u2019t do extensions,\u201d Tony said, stepping into Jason\u2019s personal space, the smell of stale tobacco and impending violence suffocating him. \u201cYou borrowed street money to play pretend. Now, the bill is due. If you don\u2019t have the cash, we start taking collateral. Fingers. Kneecaps. Pick one.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWait! Wait!\u201d Jason screamed, fishing his cracked iPhone from his pocket with trembling hands. \u201cI can get it! My ex-wife is a billionaire! She\u2019s a Sterling! Let me call her. She won\u2019t let me die!\u201d<\/p>\n
Tony raised an eyebrow, signaling his men to ease up slightly. \u201cMake the call. You have sixty seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was sitting on my balcony, watching the city lights flicker, when my private line rang. Seeing the unknown number, I answered cautiously.<\/p>\n
\u201cSophia! Sophia, please!\u201d Jason\u2019s voice was a hysterical, sobbing wreck. \u201cI owe some people money! They\u2019re going to hurt me, Sophia. They\u2019re going to break my legs. I need a hundred and fifty grand. Please, I\u2019m begging you. I\u2019ll do anything!\u201d<\/p>\n
I listened to his frantic hyperventilating, feeling the cool night breeze against my skin.<\/p>\n

I pressed End Call.<\/p>\n
In the alley, the dial tone buzzed loudly in the silence. Tony sighed, a look of grim disappointment on his face. \u201cLooks like the billionaire doesn\u2019t care if you walk again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, wait\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
Tony\u2019s fist connected with Jason\u2019s abdomen with the force of a sledgehammer. Jason collapsed to the dirty asphalt, gasping for air that wouldn\u2019t come. The enforcers didn\u2019t hold back. They didn\u2019t kill him\u2014dead men can\u2019t pay debts\u2014but they systematically ensured he understood the gravity of his situation.<\/p>\n
When they finally walked out of the alley, Jason was a broken, bleeding heap among the garbage bags.<\/p>\n
