The private catamaran charter was unceremoniously canceled. The first-class upgrades were revoked. Their picture-perfect Hawaiian vacation culminated with four deeply fractured people spending their final night aggressively screaming at one another in a damp, two-star airport motel near Honolulu, eating vending machine sandwiches.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, my solitary journey continued. I drank Barolo in Italy, walked the pristine alpine trails of Austria, and watched the flamenco dancers in the dusky squares of Spain. I allowed the European air to cleanse the betrayal from my pores.<\/p>\n
But the true, unyielding reckoning was waiting for them back home.
