The freezing wind howled into the room, bringing with it the mechanical
roar of the idling SUV outside.

I threw myself over Jessi’s body, shielding her, my heart hammering a frantic,
terrifying rhythm against my ribs.

Patricia stepped over the broken doorframe. She looked entirely out of place in
the grimy motel room, still wearing her immaculate, thousand-dollar black
mourning dress. But the facade of the grieving mother was entirely gone. Her
face was a mask of cold, predatory rage.

In her manicured, diamond-ringed right hand, she held a sleek, black, suppressed
pistol, aimed directly at my chest.

Arthur lingered behind her, shivering in his tailored suit. He looked pale,
trembling, his eyes darting wildly around the room, refusing to look at the bed
where his daughter lay dying from his cowardice. He was a pathetic, broken man,
entirely subservient to the sociopath he had married.

“It’s over, Margaret,” Patricia said, her voice eerily calm, cutting through the
roar of the wind. She stepped further into the room, the silencer tracking my
every movement. “You really thought you could hide? In a place like this? You
abducted a terminally ill child. You went crazy. You fought us. It’s a terrible,
heartbreaking tragedy.”

She tilted her head, a cruel smile playing on her lips. “I’ll shoot you in the
chest. Then I’ll put the gun in your hand. The police will rule it a
murder-suicide. The delusional grandmother killed the child and then herself to
‘save’ her. It wraps up our problem perfectly, and it’s so much cleaner than a
burial.”

“You won’t get the money, Patricia,” I spat, my voice shaking, but my gaze
locked onto hers. “I found the papers in the bear. I know about the trust. I
know about the seven-year clause.”

Arthur gasped, stepping backward. “She found it, Patty. She found the bear.”

“Shut up, Arthur,” Patricia snapped, not taking her eyes off me. “It doesn’t
matter what she found. Dead women don’t testify, Margaret. And once you and the
brat are gone, I’ll burn the bear myself. The trust will default. We win.”

She raised the gun, aligning the sights with my heart.

I didn’t raise my hands in surrender. I didn’t beg for my life.

Instead, I slowly sat up, moving off Jessi’s body. I looked at the gun, then I
looked into Patricia’s cold, dead eyes. And I smiled.

It wasn’t a smile of a victim. It was the smile of a grandmother who had spent
fifty years learning how to outsmart monsters.

“You always thought I was slow, Patricia,” I whispered, the sound carrying
clearly in the small room. “You thought because I baked cookies and knit
sweaters, I was stupid. You thought because I was old, I was obsolete.”

Patricia’s brow furrowed slightly. Her finger tightened on the trigger. “Say
your prayers, Margaret.”

“I realized I was wearing the smartwatch ten minutes ago,” I continued, my voice
gaining strength. “I saw your message. I knew you were coming. I knew you would
be faster than the authorities.”

“So you just waited to die?” she scoffed.

“No,” I said softly. “I waited for you to confess.”

I reached out with my left hand and pressed a button on the motel’s cheap,
plastic nightstand alarm clock radio.

The static of the AM/FM dial cut out instantly. It was replaced by a sharp,
electronic crackle. The sound wasn’t coming from a radio station. It was coming
from a live police scanner frequency.

Patricia froze.

“I hadn’t been waiting helplessly, Patricia,” I said, my voice now ringing with
the absolute, terrifying authority of a matriarch dispensing judgment. “I lured
you here. The Starlight Motel is exactly one mile past the county line. You are
miles outside of Arthur’s corrupted local precinct. You are in State Police
jurisdiction now. And Elias Thorne didn’t just mobilize a strike team.”

I pointed to the burner phone sitting next to the radio, the call duration timer
currently reading twelve minutes and forty seconds.

“He’s been listening on an open federal wiretap since before you kicked down
that door. He heard you admit to the poison. He heard you admit to the trust
fund. He heard you threaten to murder me and frame it as a suicide.”

The color drained from Patricia’s face, leaving her chalk-white, the arrogant
smirk shattering into a thousand pieces of pure, unadulterated terror. She
looked at the phone, then at the gun in her hand, suddenly realizing she was
holding the instrument of her own destruction.

“Arthur!” Patricia shrieked, her composure breaking completely. “Shoot her!
Shoot her now!”

But before Patricia could pull the trigger, before Arthur could even move, the
night exploded.

The large motel window to our right shattered inward, spraying glass across the
cheap carpet as a flashbang grenade detonated with a blinding, concussive roar.
The sound ripped the air from my lungs.

Through the broken doorframe and the shattered window, federal agents swarmed
into the room like a tide of black tactical gear. Laser sights crisscrossed the
room, painting Patricia and Arthur in a grid of red dots.

“FBI! Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon now!” a voice roared over a megaphone
outside.

Arthur didn’t hesitate. He dropped to his knees, throwing his hands in the air,
sobbing uncontrollably, begging for mercy, selling out his wife before the cuffs
were even on his wrists.

Patricia, however, didn’t surrender. Her sociopathy fractured into a feral,
unhinged fury. She screamed—a guttural, animalistic sound of pure hatred—and
swung the gun toward me.

An agent tackled her from the side before she could fire. She hit the floor
hard, the gun skittering under the bed. Two more agents piled onto her, forcing
her hands behind her back while she thrashed and spat curses, her perfect
designer dress ripping, her carefully constructed world burning to the ground in
seconds.

I ignored the chaos. I ignored the screaming. I turned back to the bed and
gathered Jessi into my arms.

“Paramedics! We need medics in here now!” an agent yelled, seeing the child’s
pale, unresponsive form.

Seconds later, EMTs rushed into the room, pushing past the agents who were
dragging my sobbing, pathetic son and my screaming daughter-in-law out into the
freezing night. The paramedics ripped open Jessi’s dress, attaching monitors,
establishing an IV line right there on the motel bed.

I was pushed to the periphery, watching helplessly as they worked on her, the
adrenaline finally leaving my body, leaving me hollow and shaking.

Ten minutes later, the flashing lights of the ambulance illuminated the gravel
parking lot. They had Jessi stabilized on a gurney, loading her into the back.

I walked out into the freezing air, clutching my blood-stained shawl around my
shoulders. A grim-faced doctor stepped down from the ambulance and walked over
to me. The federal agents had secured the scene; the monsters were in cages. We
had won.

But as the doctor looked at me, his face was pale, his expression heavy with a
sorrow that instantly reignited my terror.

“Ma’am,” he said, his voice quiet over the sound of the idling engine. “Mrs.
Vance. We have her. Her heart rate is climbing. She’s safe from them.”

“But what?” I demanded, gripping his forearm. “Tell me.”

He looked down at the tablet in his hands. “We ran a rapid tox screen. The
paralytic neurotoxin they gave her to fake the death… it’s a highly
experimental, corrosive synthetic. We can flush it from her organs to save her
life, but the damage it has done to her central nervous system in the last
forty-eight hours…”

He swallowed hard, looking me in the eye.

“It’s entirely irreversible. The motor functions in her lower extremities have
been severely compromised. You need to prepare yourself, Mrs. Vance, for what
happens when she wakes up. She may never walk again.”

Chapter 5: The Reckoning The door crashed to the floor, raising a cloud of stale dust and pulverized wood.
