\nI sat in Maxine\u2019s office, the Oregon rain sliding down the floor-to-ceiling windows. I pushed the screenshot of Vance\u2019s threat across her mahogany desk.<\/p>\n
Maxine adjusted her glasses. \u201cHe\u2019s claiming marital property. When exactly did you buy those tickets, Clara?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJune 13th. At 2:12 P.M.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the decree was signed?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJune 6th.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maxine leaned forward. \u201cCan you prove the exact minute of purchase?\u201d<\/p>\n
I pulled up my banking app, showing the $50 Apple Pay charge. But Maxine shook her head. \u201cA charge proves you spent money. It doesn\u2019t prove what you bought. We need irrefutable evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sunday afternoon arrived. The atmosphere in my living room was thick enough to choke on. Vance arrived flanking Loretta, with Silas trailing behind them like a nervous shadow. Waiting for them in my living room were Declan, Sutton, and my sister, Odette.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfect,\u201d I said. I stood up and retrieved my own folder, along with my thick, black accounting ledger. I dropped them onto the table.<\/p>\n
I looked Vance dead in the eyes. \u201cOn June 6th, we stood in a courtroom and were legally divorced. Yes or no?\u201d<\/p>\n
Vance shifted uncomfortably under the gaze of his children. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOn June 13th, I walked into a store and bought lottery tickets. Was I your wife at that exact moment?\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence smothered the room. \u201cNo,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen on what legal planet,\u201d I asked, my voice rising to command the space, \u201care you demanding half of my assets?\u201d<\/p>\n
Loretta couldn\u2019t contain herself. She sprang up. \u201cPieces of paper! You lived under our roof for twenty years! You\u2019re going to wipe away two decades of loyalty with a technicality?\u201d<\/p>\n
I slammed my hand down on the black ledger. The smack echoed like a gunshot. \u201cFine, Loretta! Let\u2019s talk about loyalty!\u201d<\/p>\n
I ripped the ledger open. \u201cA hundred and fifty thousand dollars for Silas\u2019s house! Eighty thousand for Lana\u2019s bankrupt boutique! A hundred thousand for Harrison\u2019s cancer treatments, paid directly out of my blood and sweat!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re counting pennies!\u201d Loretta shrieked, her face purple.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m counting my pennies!\u201d I roared back. \u201cThe same pennies you are trying to extort from me right now!\u201d<\/p>\n
I flipped the page, pointing a trembling finger at the ink. \u201cTwo hundred thousand dollars! Secretly wired by Vance to Silas, stolen from our joint account behind my back! And you have the audacity to stand in my home and talk to me about a moral conscience?\u201d<\/p>\n
Silas looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. Vance was hyperventilating, his eyes darting frantically toward Declan and Sutton, who were staring at him with undisguised disgust.<\/p>\n
\u201cClara, please,\u201d Vance begged, dropping the tough-guy act. \u201cI just desperately need cash for the presses. If the shop goes under\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you needed cash,\u201d Declan\u2019s voice cut through the room like a scythe. My son stood up, towering over his father. \u201cYou should have come to mom and asked for a loan like a man. Instead, you tried to rob her and blame her for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vance flinched as if he\u2019d been struck.<\/p>\n
I pulled the printed stills from the CCTV footage and tossed them onto Vance\u2019s manila folder. \u201cTimestamped. Seven days after the divorce. If you want to sue me, Vance, file the papers. But know that when you do, I will countersue for legal fees, and I will submit this to the judge to prove this is a malicious, extortionate shakedown.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at the three of them\u2014the architects of my decades-long misery. \u201cYou viewed my kindness as a tax I owed you. But the well is officially dry. Get out of my house.\u201d<\/p>\n
The crushing silence that followed was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. They had no counter-argument. No legal standing. No moral high ground.<\/p>\n
They picked up their coats and walked out the door, leaving with absolutely nothing.
