Gabriel sat in the courtyard, his leg bandaged, Lupita asleep against his shoulder. He didn\u2019t stand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came to fix the mess this woman created.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom\u00e1s stepped out of the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one here made a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou be quiet, boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel raised a hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son speaks in his own house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old woman stiffened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour house is in debt, Gabriel. While you were off playing hero, the debts kept growing. This girl bought corn, medicine, fabric on credit. Don Anselmo was generous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heat rushed into my face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid every week with laundry, sewing, and eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Anselmo smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cInterest, girl. Paying is one thing. Settling a debt is another.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled out papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe property can cover it. Or we can make another arrangement. The older boys can work my fields. Clara would serve nicely in my sister\u2019s house. The little one\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t finish that sentence,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n

His voice was low, but everyone fell silent.<\/p>\n

Don Anselmo raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not in a position to threaten anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not threatening you. I\u2019m warning you that you will not touch my children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Eulalia struck the ground with her cane.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour children were dying with her!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom\u00e1s let out a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were dying before her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clara stepped out with the twins behind her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn\u00e9s taught us how to nixtamalize corn so it would last longer. She took us to the mill when nobody wanted to lend us anything. She treated us with herbal tea when there was no doctor. She made shoes from old leather.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mateo raised a hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she killed a snake in the chicken coop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lupita woke up.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she knows how to make cornbread.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Eulalia looked at them as though betrayal itself had entered their blood.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe filled your heads with nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel carefully set Lupita down and stood up.<\/p>\n

It cost him.<\/p>\n

I saw pain bite into his leg, but he asked for no help.<\/p>\n

\u201cMother, where are my letters?\u201d<\/p>\n

She blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat letters?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel held up the leather bundle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ones I sent. The ones In\u00e9s never received. The ones my children never received.\u201d<\/p>\n

The assistant judge lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

Don Anselmo quietly gathered his papers.<\/p>\n

Guilt has a smell, and that morning it filled the courtyard.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was only protecting your house,\u201d Do\u00f1a Eulalia said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You wanted it empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old woman trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat woman is nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel turned toward me.<\/p>\n

For the first time since I had known him, I saw the captain beneath the broken man.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest hurt.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy arrangement,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy law,\u201d he answered. \u201cAnd by life, if she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what to say.<\/p>\n

Because for a year I had repeated to myself that I expected nothing.<\/p>\n

But the heart never asks permission when it learns to wait.<\/p>\n
