\u201cExpose what?\u201d<\/p>\n

He studied me for a long second before answering.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinancial fraud. Possibly tied to his workplace. And\u2026 something personal involving his marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

My head snapped up. \u201cMarissa?\u201d<\/p>\n

From the curb, she looked at me through tears, shaking her head violently. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anything,\u201d she sobbed. \u201cI swear I didn\u2019t know he was in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police lights kept spinning, painting everyone in red and blue fractures.<\/p>\n

Then Miles added something quieter, almost reluctant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more. We found a draft email on his phone. It was addressed to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think he was about to report it,\u201d Miles said. \u201cBut there\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n

He slid another photo toward me.<\/p>\n

It was Marissa.<\/p>\n

Standing outside the same parking garage.<\/p>\n

Talking to the same man.<\/p>\n

My breath stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d I said immediately. \u201cShe wouldn\u2019t\u2014she loves him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miles didn\u2019t react to my words. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying she ordered anything. But she may have known more than she admitted.\u201d<\/p>\n

My head spun.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered. \u201cNo, she was covered in blood. She was crying. She was hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can be victims and still be involved in ways they don\u2019t understand yet,\u201d he said carefully.<\/p>\n

Silence filled the car.<\/p>\n

Then his radio crackled.<\/p>\n

A voice came through: \u201cSuspect located. Male, 30s. Attempting to flee hospital grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart slammed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s your son,\u201d Miles said immediately, starting the engine.<\/p>\n

We arrived at the hospital just as chaos unfolded.<\/p>\n

Police officers were running through the emergency entrance. A stretcher was being wheeled fast down the corridor.<\/p>\n

I sat beside his bed, holding his hand while machines softly beeped around us.<\/p>\n

Marissa stood near the window, silent, shaking.<\/p>\n

Detective Miles appeared briefly in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cCase is closed,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the damage isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at Daniel, then at me.<\/p>\n
