No one answered.<\/p>\n

The collector left copies of the papers and said if we didn\u2019t pay, they would take legal action to take the house from Austin and Keaton.<\/p>\n

When they left, Bernice shut the door and changed her tone. \u201cWhat is done is done. Take out a personal loan, we will pay part of it, and Austin can pay you back little by little.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want me to take a loan?\u201d I asked. \u201cSo you admit you planned to take my money from the start?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would a woman want to make so much money if not to help her husband\u2019s family?\u201d Bernice said back.<\/p>\n

Keaton said nothing to stop her.<\/p>\n

His silence destroyed what was left of our marriage.<\/p>\n

I went to the office, put the main papers in a safe, and called a lawyer named Eve Hansen. After looking at the legal paper I signed years ago, she said the situation was bad, but we could fight it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe paper exists,\u201d lawyer Hansen said, \u201cbut we can prove in court that it was only meant for buying the house, not for taking on someone else\u2019s debt. We will cancel it today, notify the land office, and ask the court to stop them from taking your house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCould I lose my house?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will not be easy,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cBut you have proofs that you paid for the house, you never got any loan money, and you didn\u2019t agree to this. Also, that paper listing your salary proves they planned to trick you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I signed the cancellation paper. The next day, lawyer Hansen filed everything with the court. She also told me to record any talk where they tried to force me to pay.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long for them to try again.<\/p>\n

That night, Bernice walked into my office without knocking. \u201cStop bringing lawyers into this! If you lock the house papers, you will ruin Keaton!\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned on the sound recorder on my phone. \u201cAnd who cared about ruining me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wanted to hurt you!\u201d she yelled. \u201cWe just knew that if Austin failed, you could pay for it. With your high salary, you can clear this debt in a few years!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that why you lied to me about fake doctor bills?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Bernice bit her lip. \u201cAustin had a hard time. A mother will do anything to help her son!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven by tricking your daughter-in-law?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be dramatic! That money stayed in the family!\u201d<\/p>\n

Keaton walked in then. \u201cMom, stop talking!\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t stop her to protect me. He stopped her because he realized she was admitting to everything on tape.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know about the fake bills?\u201d I asked Keaton.<\/p>\n

Keaton took too long to answer. \u201cI knew some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know she made up fake illnesses to get my money?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we would pay you back later,\u201d he mumbled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith whose money?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He stayed quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith my money,\u201d I said for him.<\/p>\n

Bernice held her head up. \u201cDon\u2019t forget that because of us, you have a husband and a home!\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt sad, but I was not broken anymore. \u201cI paid for this home. And the husband you gave me used my trust to ruin my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, lawyer Hansen listened to the recording and added it to our evidence. Then she called a meeting with the loan company, Keaton, Austin, and Bernice at an office near the courthouse.<\/p>\n

Austin came in wearing a hat and looked very tired. His nice motorcycle was gone, and his bar was closed.<\/p>\n
