That night, after Lily fell asleep beside my bed, I reviewed her tuition records. Every payment had come from my account.<\/p>\n

I pulled Lily\u2019s original file.<\/p>\n
At the bottom of the application was a signature from my late wife, Claire.<\/p>\n

One child had even suffered an asthma attack there years earlier. His parents were told he became ill during recess.<\/p>\n
Then Mr. Lewis saw the sheet music and recognized the connection.<\/p>\n

The attached photo showed the compartment beneath the badge cabinet open. Inside sat a blue folder with Claire\u2019s name on it, and across it lay a recent photograph of Lily on her first day of kindergarten.<\/p>\n
On the back of that photo were the words:<\/p>\n
Daniel Carter still believes Claire\u2019s death was an illness.<\/p>\n
Then a second message arrived:<\/p>\n
Do not trust the person who gave you the key.<\/p>\n
I looked down.<\/p>\n
The key was gone from Lily\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n
The front door, which I had locked, stood slightly open.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Mercer returned. Officer Diaz found a note beneath the entry table.<\/p>\n
The key was never meant for the cabinet.<\/p>\n
A brass-colored fleck on the floor suggested the key may have been painted\u2014possibly a decoy.<\/p>\n
Someone wanted us to believe the key mattered.<\/p>\n

I decided to leave the house with Lily. I called Claire\u2019s sister, Rachel, who flew in that evening.<\/p>\n
