I went to my son’s apartment with a duplicate key, convinced I was going to catch my daughter-in-law with another man.

“If that woman is cheating on my son, I will kick her out of her own house today,” Margaret muttered quietly as she inserted a key into the lock that nobody knew she had.

It was a little after four in the afternoon in a modern building in the Northwood district of Minneapolis. The hallway was completely empty, and Margaret had chosen this specific time because she knew her son, Samuel, was still working at his engineering firm until after seven while her daughter-in-law, Chloe, usually taught yoga and pilates classes every afternoon.

Margaret had been sneaking into the apartment for months without telling anyone.

She did not consider herself a meddlesome mother-in-law, believing instead that she was simply a devoted mother looking after her son. She routinely checked if there was food in the refrigerator, if Samuel’s shirts were properly ironed, if the bathroom was clean, and even if Chloe bought overpriced groceries. She had secret duplicate keys made without telling a soul, convinced that having them would prove necessary someday.

And that day, in her mind, had finally arrived.

The previous afternoon, she had spotted Chloe leaving a shopping center, laughing happily beside a well-dressed man who was driving a sleek silver SUV. The man had opened the passenger door for her, and Chloe had stepped inside without any hesitation.

Margaret had hardly slept a wink all night.

For her, the explanation was glaringly obvious, leading her to believe that Chloe was having an affair.

“My poor son is breaking his back at work while she is out walking around with another man,” she repeated to herself, fueling her growing anger.

She entered the apartment expecting to find immediate proof of infidelity, but the kitchen was completely spotless. There were no dirty glasses, unused plates, gift bags, or anything else out of the ordinary anywhere in sight. Far from reassuring her, this spotless environment only served to make her even more suspicious.

“She cleaned everything up before going out to meet him,” she thought bitterly.

Then she heard light laughter coming from behind the closed master bedroom door.

First, she heard a young, flirtatious female voice ring out.

A moment later, a distinct male voice answered back.

Margaret remained completely motionless in the hallway.

She felt her heart pounding against her chest so hard that she had to lean against the wall for support.

Then she heard the unmistakable pop of a champagne bottle being opened inside.

“Oh, my love, you really are a magician,” the young girl giggled playfully. “But what if Samuel comes back early?”

Margaret gritted her teeth in absolute fury.

Samuel!

The shameless young woman even knew her own son’s name.

She tiptoed down the quiet hallway, imagining the scene playing out on the other side of the door. She pictured Chloe with that strange man in the double bed, creating a perfect deception. She was already preparing the harsh words with which she planned to humiliate her daughter-in-law.

Before she could push the door open, she heard the man reply smoothly.

“Don’t worry at all,” the man said. “Samuel is working late today, I got the key myself, and Chloe won’t be back until tonight.”

Margaret froze in her tracks.

She recognized that voice instantly.

She had listened to that exact voice for thirty-two long years.

She pushed the bedroom door open with all her force.

What she saw inside was not her daughter-in-law at all.

In her son’s bed lay her own husband, Walter, wearing a dark silk robe he swore he had lost during a business trip to Columbus. Beside him, a young woman who could not have been more than twenty-five held a cold glass of champagne.

Walter turned completely pale in an instant.

“Margaret… what are you doing here?” he gasped out loud.

She did not answer him right away.

The young woman stroked Walter’s arm gently and asked in a terrified whisper.

“Is she… your wife?”

Margaret felt as if her whole world was splitting in two right before her eyes.

However, she did not yet realize that the infidelity itself was not even the worst part of the situation. The absolute worst part was how Walter had managed to turn his own son into an accomplice without Samuel even knowing it, and what she was about to discover next was completely unbelievable.

PART 2

Walter tried frantically to cover his body while the young woman picked up her scattered clothes from the hardwood floor.

“It is not what it looks like,” he stammered nervously.

Margaret let out a cold, dry laugh that echoed in the quiet room.

“You are lying in our son’s bed with a girl young enough to be our daughter, drinking the expensive champagne Samuel bought for your anniversary,” she said sharply. “Explain to me what part of this scene I am misunderstanding.”

The young woman, whose name was Tiffany, practically ran out of the apartment as fast as she could.

When the front door finally clicked shut, Walter immediately changed his defensive tone.

“We are grown adults, so please do not make a scene about something we can easily settle at home,” he demanded.

Margaret looked at him with a strange level of calmness that surprised even her.

For decades she had cooked every meal for him, managed every single dollar of their budget, cared for him during his stomach illnesses, defended him against extended family members, and put her own personal dreams on hold. Just seconds ago, she had heard him describe her to a stranger as a boring woman who felt like unsweetened oatmeal.

“Before we talk about our house, you are going to tell me exactly how you got inside this apartment,” she said firmly.

Walter lowered his gaze, unable to look her in the eye.

That was when the real truth was revealed.

Weeks earlier, Walter had told Samuel that he needed a quiet location to work on a confidential business project away from home. He asked to use Samuel’s empty apartment for a few afternoons, taking advantage of the fact that the young couple would both be out working.

Samuel, who had always admired his father deeply, suspected nothing wrong at all.

He willingly lent his father his house key.

Walter secretly had a duplicate copy made for himself.

“He truly believes you come here to work,” Margaret whispered softly.

“Yes,” Walter admitted quietly.

“And have you brought women here more than once?” she asked directly.

Walter did not answer her question.

His silence was the only answer she needed.

Margaret looked at the unmade bed, the empty glasses, the silk robe, and the strange bottle of perfume sitting on the nightstand. She suddenly felt far more anger on behalf of Samuel and Chloe than she did for herself.

“You did not just betray my trust,” she said with deep anger. “You defiled our son’s home and completely abused the love he had for you.”

Walter stood up suddenly from the bed.

“Samuel does not ever have to find out about this,” he insisted.

That was the exact moment Margaret understood what his real fear actually was.

He was not worried about losing his marriage at all.

He was terrified of losing his carefully crafted image as an exemplary father.

“You are going to get dressed right now,” she ordered him firmly. “You will pack your personal items from our home, and tonight, when Samuel gets off work, you will come here and tell him the whole truth while looking him straight in the eye.”

“Margaret, you have completely lost your mind,” he snapped back.

“If I am forced to tell him myself, you will never speak to me again, and I will make sure he learns every single detail of what you did,” she warned him coldly.

Walter was left completely speechless by her threat.

She grabbed her handbag, walked out of the bedroom, and went downstairs to the quiet street outside.

She thought she was going to burst into tears right there on the sidewalk, but she did not cry.

Instead, she took out her cell phone and dialed Chloe’s number.

“Can you meet me at the local coffee shop in half an hour?” Margaret asked as soon as her daughter-in-law picked up.

Chloe sounded immediately alarmed by the sudden request.

“Did something terrible happen to Samuel?” Chloe asked quickly.

“No, but I need to apologize to you for something I have been doing behind your back for months,” Margaret confessed.

Inside the quiet coffee shop, Margaret placed the secret duplicate key directly on the wooden table between them.

She confessed that she had been sneaking into their apartment without permission, and she also admitted that she had spotted Chloe in the silver SUV the previous day.

Chloe stared at her in utter surprise before almost bursting out laughing in relief.

“That was just an executive ride hailing driver,” Chloe explained gently. “I had to book a large vehicle because I was transporting heavy architectural models for an important client.”

Margaret closed her eyes in deep embarrassment.

She had spent days chasing a completely imaginary betrayal while the real betrayal was happening inside her own family.

Before she could explain the rest of the story, Chloe’s cell phone rang loudly.

It was Samuel calling.

Chloe answered the call on speakerphone.

Samuel’s agitated voice was clearly audible to both of them from the other end.

“My dad just showed up here with two large suitcases,” Samuel said hurriedly. “He claims Mom kicked him out of the house and that everything is completely your fault.”

Margaret looked up into Chloe’s eyes.

Walter had just launched his very last desperate move.
