My Ex Thought He Won—Until His $1.5M Purchase for His Mistress Was Declined

Chapter 5: The Alley of Consequences

By nightfall, Jason’s world had entirely evaporated. His company employees, discovering the accounts were frozen and their paychecks were bouncing, looted the office electronics and threatened to call the Labor Board. He was locked out of his apartment. He was a phantom.

Hungry, exhausted, and terrified, he wandered the shadowy concrete labyrinth of downtown Los Angeles.

He had one final, terrifying secret he had kept from me. To keep his failing startup looking profitable to Lily, he had borrowed a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from an underground syndicate. And today was collection day.

As Jason ducked into a narrow, damp alleyway to avoid the glow of a passing police cruiser, heavy footsteps echoed behind him.

“Going somewhere, tech bro?”

Jason froze. Emerging from the shadows were three massive, imposing men. The leader, a man known locally as Tony, possessed a face marked by a jagged scar and eyes devoid of human empathy.

“Tony… listen, I just need an extension,” Jason pleaded, backing up until his spine hit the cold, wet brick of a dead end. “My accounts got locked due to a legal error. Give me forty-eight hours.”

“An extension?” Tony chuckled, a dry, grating sound. He snapped his fingers.

Before Jason could react, one of the enforcers lunged, grabbing him by the lapels of his ruined Tom Ford suit and slamming him brutally against the masonry. The breath exploded from Jason’s lungs.

“In my line of work, we don’t do extensions,” Tony said, stepping into Jason’s personal space, the smell of stale tobacco and impending violence suffocating him. “You borrowed street money to play pretend. Now, the bill is due. If you don’t have the cash, we start taking collateral. Fingers. Kneecaps. Pick one.”

“Wait! Wait!” Jason screamed, fishing his cracked iPhone from his pocket with trembling hands. “I can get it! My ex-wife is a billionaire! She’s a Sterling! Let me call her. She won’t let me die!”

Tony raised an eyebrow, signaling his men to ease up slightly. “Make the call. You have sixty seconds.”

I was sitting on my balcony, watching the city lights flicker, when my private line rang. Seeing the unknown number, I answered cautiously.

“Sophia! Sophia, please!” Jason’s voice was a hysterical, sobbing wreck. “I owe some people money! They’re going to hurt me, Sophia. They’re going to break my legs. I need a hundred and fifty grand. Please, I’m begging you. I’ll do anything!”

I listened to his frantic hyperventilating, feeling the cool night breeze against my skin.

“Jason,” I said, my voice as calm and indifferent as the ocean. “Why would I ever finance your gambling debts with loan sharks? You built this nightmare with your own two hands.”

“Sophia, please, I’m human! Have a heart!” he wailed, the sheer terror echoing through the receiver.

“Where was your heart when you plotted to leave me with nothing?” I replied. “Where was your heart when you stole my grandfather’s painting? You are in the dark because you walked away from the light. Do not call this number again.”

I pressed End Call.

In the alley, the dial tone buzzed loudly in the silence. Tony sighed, a look of grim disappointment on his face. “Looks like the billionaire doesn’t care if you walk again.”

“No, wait—”

Tony’s fist connected with Jason’s abdomen with the force of a sledgehammer. Jason collapsed to the dirty asphalt, gasping for air that wouldn’t come. The enforcers didn’t hold back. They didn’t kill him—dead men can’t pay debts—but they systematically ensured he understood the gravity of his situation.

When they finally walked out of the alley, Jason was a broken, bleeding heap among the garbage bags.

“You have three days to find the money,” Tony’s voice drifted back from the street. “Next time, you lose the leg.”

Jason lay in the filth, staring up at the smog-choked sky, finally comprehending the true cost of his betrayal.
