PART 1 — THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
“What did you just fabricate, you little liar?”
My father’s voice shook the windows.
He took one heavy step toward Chloe.
I moved instantly, placing myself between them.
“Don’t you dare threaten my daughter.”
Dad stopped, his jaw tightening.
Mom rolled her eyes. “Maya, control that child. She’s been watching too many crime shows.”
But Sarah said nothing.
That was what frightened me most.
My sister, who had spent the last twenty minutes bragging about her PhD and demanding my house, was staring at Chloe as if she had just seen a ghost.
Chloe calmly picked up the tablet she had been holding.
“I didn’t fabricate anything,” she said.
She tapped the screen.
“I found it.”
Sarah’s face drained of color.
“What did you find?” I asked.
Chloe looked at me.
“The records showing Aunt Sarah hasn’t been enrolled in her PhD program for three years.”
Silence.
Mom laughed nervously.
“That’s ridiculous. Sarah graduated yesterday.”
“No,” Chloe replied. “She attended a ceremony yesterday.”
Sarah finally spoke.
“Enough.”
Chloe turned the tablet toward her.
“I have the university payment records, enrollment records, emails, and the files from the private server.”
Sarah’s eyes widened.
Dad stepped forward.
“Give me that tablet.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“I said give it to me.”
Chloe smiled faintly.
“I made copies.”
Sarah suddenly grabbed Dad’s arm.
“Dad, stop.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
Sarah whispered, “Because she knows.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What does she know?”
Sarah looked at me.
For the first time in my life, my sister looked afraid of me.
“Nothing,” she said quickly.
Chloe shook her head.
“That’s not true.”
She opened another file.
“Aunt Sarah didn’t earn a PhD.”
She paused.
“She bought one.”
Mom slapped her hand over her mouth.
Dad stared at Sarah.
Sarah began shaking her head.
“No. No, that’s impossible.”
Chloe continued.
“She paid a research consultant to write most of her dissertation. Then someone inside the university helped alter the submission records.”
My father’s face turned purple.
“Where did you get this?”
“From a leaked archive.”
Dad laughed bitterly.
“You expect us to believe an eleven-year-old hacked a university?”
“I didn’t hack it.”
Chloe looked at me.
“Someone sent it to me.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“Someone who has been waiting for Aunt Sarah to be exposed.”
Sarah suddenly screamed.
“Stop!”
Everyone froze.
Her carefully maintained confidence shattered.
“You don’t understand!”
“Then explain,” I said.
She stared at me.
For years, I had been the failure.
The waitress.
The single mother.
The daughter who couldn’t afford vacations.
Sarah was the brilliant one.
The doctor.
The pride of the family.
And now she couldn’t even look me in the eye.
My phone buzzed.
I glanced at the screen.
Unknown number.
One message.
Maya, your daughter found only the beginning. Check the name on the mortgage records.
My stomach twisted.
I opened the attachment.
It was a scanned document.
My house.
My mortgage.
And beneath my name was another name I had never seen before.
Daniel Mercer.
I whispered, “Who is Daniel Mercer?”
Sarah collapsed into a chair.
Dad suddenly stopped breathing.
Mom stared at him.
And in that moment, I realized the house they had come to steal wasn’t really the secret.
It was the evidence.
