PART 3
The formal mediation room was located high on the twelfth floor of a commercial building downtown. It featured light cream walls, a clean coffee maker in the corner, and modern abstract paintings chosen to convey a sense of peaceful calm. Everything seemed specifically designed so a family could fall apart completely without ever disturbing the quiet decor.
Gretchen sat quietly next to Abigail at the long conference table. Sitting directly across from them were Joshua and his experienced attorney, a silver-haired man named Frank who wore an expensive watch and maintained an impatient demeanor.
At first, the formal meeting followed the exact written script that Joshua had fully anticipated.
They discussed selling the suburban house, dividing up the household furniture, setting a legal custody schedule for Maxine, and covering ongoing school expenses. Joshua answered every question in a firm tone while constantly using polished phrases like balanced agreement, family welfare, and respectful closure.
Every so often he glanced over at Gretchen, likely checking to make sure that she was still completely defeated.
She made sure to look the exact part he expected.
She kept her shoulders visibly tense, offered brief answers, and allowed Abigail to lead the entire discussion.
Then they finally reached the complex financial section of the agreement.
Frank slid a neat paper folder toward the middle of the large table.
“My client strongly believes this agreement reflects a completely fair distribution of all assets accumulated during the marriage,” Frank stated smoothly.
Abigail nodded her head slowly in response.
“I am sure he truly believes that,” Abigail said in a calm tone.
She pulled out a certified bank document and laid it flat on the table.
“However, this major investment account was completely left off your list,” Abigail noted crisply.
Then she laid down a second official financial statement right beside the first one.
“Nor was this heavy investment account included anywhere in your draft,” she added.
Joshua’s body went completely rigid in his leather chair.
Frank adjusted his glasses nervously as he leaned forward.
“Where exactly did you obtain these documents?” Frank asked sharply.
“We obtained them from official tax records, wire transfers, and income generated during the marriage,” Abigail answered smoothly. “We have officially identified over 1.2 million dollars in completely undeclared marital assets.”
The heavy silence in the room ceased to be professional and became dangerous.
Frank turned his head and glared directly at Joshua.
“Why am I seeing these massive figures for the very first time today?” Frank demanded angrily.
“Those are purely private business investments,” Joshua stammered out quickly. “They were never part of our joint marital assets.”
Abigail opened another thick folder with complete confidence.
“They were directly funded by corporate bonuses and returns earned during your marriage,” Abigail countered firmly. “Several large sums were transferred immediately after you formally requested a divorce.”
Joshua clenched his jaw tightly as he stared at the papers. Gretchen watched him realize in real time that he had lost all control over the situation.
Abigail displayed clear evidence showing transfers made to Cheyenne’s business, invoices for non-existent consulting services, the private lease agreement for the apartment, and luxury personal expenses paid with cards tied to hidden accounts.
When Abigail clearly pronounced Cheyenne’s full name, Frank slowly closed his eyes in sheer frustration.
“Please tell me right now that you did not divert joint family resources to fund an affair,” Frank muttered to his client.
Joshua did not answer the question at all.
There was simply no possible answer that could save him from the visual evidence on the table.
The mediator immediately called for a fifteen-minute recess. Joshua followed Gretchen out into the long building hallway right away.
“Gretchen, please wait a second and talk to me, do not do this,” he pleaded desperately.
She stopped moving and turned around in front of a wide window overlooking the street traffic below.
His frantic phrase left her completely cold inside. He did not say forgive me, nor did he say I hurt you deeply. He only begged that she not make him pay for his actions.
“I am not doing anything to you,” she replied in a steady voice. “You did all of this to yourself.”
“You simply do not understand how any of this started,” Joshua argued defensively.
“Then explain one simple thing to me clearly,” she challenged him. “Did you take money directly out of our daughter’s college trust fund?”
Joshua looked down at the carpet in deep shame.
That single silent gesture was his complete confession.
“That was only temporary,” Joshua claimed softly.
Gretchen felt an intense physical pain sharp in her chest.
“Three hundred thousand dollars taken from your daughter is temporary?” she asked incredulously.
“I was fully planning to put every dollar back as soon as I closed a major business deal,” he claimed.
“And what if that deal did not close?” she pushed back sharply.
He stayed completely silent because he had no valid excuse.
“Maxine trusts you completely,” Gretchen whispered emotionally. “She constantly brags to her friends that her dad always keeps his promises. Do you know what is actually worse? I believed that exact same lie about you for fourteen years.”
Joshua ran both of his hands over his tired face.
“Cheyenne simply made me feel important again,” Joshua admitted quietly.
That sudden moment of raw honesty proved far more painful than any lie he had ever told her.
He had not destroyed his entire family out of deep love for another person. He had gambled away his own daughter’s future security simply because a younger woman admired his expensive suits, his lavish business trips, and his impressive corporate job title.
“I was right there beside you when we did not even have enough money to replace our broken refrigerator,” Gretchen reminded him softly. “I worked exhausting double shifts at the hospital when you lost your job years ago. I sold my own mother’s antique jewelry just to help make the down payment on our house. I stopped making you feel important because I knew all your real fears and flaws. You never wanted true love, Joshua. You just wanted an admiring audience.”
When they returned to the conference room, the financial negotiations became absolutely brutal.
Abigail presented the full financial audit report complete with explicit dates, contracts, bank transfers, and incriminating internal emails. She also revealed that Joshua had used corporate expense accounts to cover luxury trips taken with Cheyenne. That illegal detail did not just complicate the divorce, as it was guaranteed to trigger a massive corporate audit at his firm.
Frank completely stopped defending Joshua and immediately shifted into total damage control.
“If this matter goes before a family court judge, we will immediately request full asset protection measures, a complete forensic financial audit, and immediate restitution of the minor child’s trust fund,” Abigail declared firmly.
The neutral mediator looked over at Joshua with profound disapproval.
“Hiding major assets in a divorce is exceptionally serious on its own,” the mediator observed coldly. “Misappropriating funds specifically set aside for a minor child makes your legal standing infinitely worse.”
Joshua looked over at Gretchen as if desperately expecting her to soften the severe consequences. For fourteen years, she had done that exact thing by constantly explaining away his prolonged absences, justifying his awful moods, covering his mistakes, and protecting his image in front of Maxine.
This time, she did absolutely nothing to help him.
Several stressful hours later, the entire divorce agreement was completely rewritten from scratch.
Joshua formally agreed to restore every dollar to the college education fund, yield a significantly larger share of all total assets to Gretchen, cover all costs for the financial audit, and open every account linked to his businesses for legal inspection. He also lost his legal right to sell their suburban house without her express written authorization.
He signed the binding documents with a visibly trembling hand.
For long months he had meticulously prepared everything so that Gretchen would sign quickly while tired and trusting. In the end, he was the one trapped completely before a binding legal document that he no longer controlled.
As they finally left the building, Cheyenne was still waiting patiently near the broad elevators down the hall. She no longer looked confident or composed. She held her phone tightly in both hands while nervously tapping her foot against the floor.
Joshua walked up to her, and Gretchen overheard a quick snippet of their quiet argument.
“You explicitly told me that everything was completely taken care of!” Cheyenne demanded in a sharp tone.
“I honestly had no idea she hired a legal team,” Joshua stammered weakly.
“What is going to happen to the St. Paul apartment now?” Cheyenne asked in a panic.
Gretchen kept walking right past them toward the exit doors.
She understood completely that their exciting fantasy had only worked as long as she was quietly absorbing all the collateral damage behind the scenes. Now that there were frozen bank accounts, sharp lawyers, and severe consequences, their romantic affair was beginning to look like what it had always been, which was a selfish partnership built entirely on lies.
Late that same night, Joshua sent several desperate text messages to her phone.
“We really need to sit down and talk about this,” read the first text.
“This whole situation got completely out of control,” read the second text.
